Hood Vibrating

I would just let the dealer handle it. Just your luck that the dealer will say that the expanding foam increased the gap and broke the adhesive, and deny your claim.

 

It's probably best that the dealer deal with this. My luck if I did a DYI and later had some separate issue they'd claim warranty voided. Plus, I forget who said it but earlier in the thread someone mentioned that a DYI fix like expanding foam may cause hood ripples or an uneven surface on the hood.

I know when I take mine in I'll point out to the dealership to ensure all the metal is the way it's supposed to be. But, that I want my hood to stop vibrating as it's very annoying. It's like the big Gary mole on the face, I can't stop looking at it

 

Very true on the notion that they might use that as cause for a warranty void. I'll probably leave it be until my 5k service which is in about a month.

Here is what my dealer said when I told her about this potential issue on hood structure adhesive separation and that mine will be delivered by 12/12/16. No problem as it is a warranty issue and will be covered. We will inspect it upon arrival and for the first 3 years. If it is widespread Toyota will give dealers the recommended fix and potentially a recall which does not have to be Safety NTSB forced. I suggest if you have a problem go see your dealer first and get it logged in with them.

I have not had any vibrating or flexing issues yet, but there are some spots coming apart for sure...I had planned on lettting the dealer do my first oil change, so I'll file it then as well...

 

if you really wanted to try and fix this problem yourself i'd steer clear of anything that cannot flex and expand in different temperatures. i don't think gorilla glue or expanding foam are able to do that.

you'd want to use auto seam sealer, something like Fusor 800 Seam Sealer or 3M seam sealers (some are available in different colors)

chances are this is how the dealers are going to be instructed to resolve the problem.

 

Good point. I may try something from 3M. For things such as this I will usually do a better job than the dealership. I know how to apply glue for eff sake. LOL.

This guy is spot on. Don't attempt any DIY repairs and then expect Toyota to cover it later on. My service manager would not approve warranty work on stuff customers attempted to fix themselves for fear Toyota would deny the warranty claim, causing our dealership to not get paid.

With that being said, my sport is not experiencing this issue. I will check my adhesive tomorrow, but I bet it's due to the scoop adding rigidity like others said.

 

I just checked mine (Texas built 10/15)...every single blob of goop has separated. I called Toyota Corp. and my guy at the dealership. Taking it in on Monday for an inspection. I'm sure it will be a super easy fix...once they figure out what to do.

 

Just got back from the dealer and they were basically clueless as to how to fix the broken adhesive. They were going to send the truck to a body shop (i.e.) service king. I have had nothing but a headache with the quality of their work so I refused to send it there. I spoke with the manager and he said he would use a different body shop but couldn't guarantee the work?????? 40k to Toyota and this is how they respond to an issue? This is my 4th Tacoma and not one issue with any of the previous 3! Pissed doesn't begin to explain my feeling! I guess I will try a different dealer next week?

 

They should have contacted Toyota tech support to see what they recommend. Do you know if they did that?

 

I contacted Toyota first. They took the information, vin, etc. and directed me to the service department at the local dealership. They had the techs as well as the service manager look at the situation and after a 2 1/2 hour wait they concluded a body shop was the fix? What made me laugh was I mentioned how Toyota gluing your hood together seemed a little CHEAP, and they threw other auto makers under the bus saying they glue fenders on their vehicles.

I don't think this is really a big deal though. I know the trucks are expensive, but this seems to be an easy fix to me. I would wait awhile, and I'm sure once more owners file Toyota will have a proper remedy. I would like them to send some of the adhesive they used at the factory to their dealerships, where their techs can apply some more, from a better batch. The blobs of goop that are still holding on mine are holding well, and it looks like a good flexible product. Someone mentioned upthread that maybe it was a bad batch or two. Maybe they just need to tweak the formula?
Either way, its not worth freaking out over...

 

never really thought about the paint...but I guess you're right. Mine doesn't "jiggle" or vibrate so far...that would drive me batty for sure.

 

I don't think anyone is panicking, we just want the hood assembly to be the way it was intended/engineered.

 

I stop by my dealer and told my sales person about the issue and he was very glad to hear about the vibrating hood issue but so far they had no one come back to them about it. so they had two 2016 on the lot 1=DC OFF ROAD and a DC SPORT so I took him up to them we pop the hood and bingo you could not help but see the issue. He told me both truck were sold and he would get them into the shop and make them right.
My build date is DEC 4TH and My sales man assured me it would be checked out before I take owner ship

 

I had the same experience...I was given a ref #. I asked the customer service rep if I was supposed to write it on a few pieces of paper, fold said pieces of paper, and use them as shims. She was nice, but clueless. It's not a big deal. I'm heading in on Monday.
