So I'm getting ready to gather all the parts for a 4wd conversion.

But my question is, I see a lot of people talking about gearing.

What specifically has to be done to the rear diff with a 4wd conversion?

I hadn't come across this information in all my searching.

Truck is an 02 pre runner

F&R suspension, OBA, Custom bed rack, RTT, rear frame plates, 4x4 conversion from prerunner, many other
Nothing - but you must match gear ratio's in both differentials. Either you'll find a front already geared to the same ratio as the existing rear, or you'll have to regear one or the other (or both)....

What trans do you have, manual or auto? There are many variables with the conversion that you need to consider.
What tire size will you end up with?
Solid axle or OEM clam shell?
Driver or passenger side drop, if going with a solid axle.
    Leaf or 3 link & CO's?

Most important, is your truck a daily driver. That is sometimes a deciding factor in the direction you go, at least it was for me.

Look through the 'Solid Axle' forum here. Some pretty killer rigs in there.

Hope this helps you... good luck.

    Your truck looks good.
What did the wheels run you since they are advertised as a proprietary size from Trail Gear? Their rims are what put me out of their market, amongst other things.

    How does it perform off-road?

    Just curious.

Thanks for the killer info guys!

I have a buddy who bought a wrecked '96, and only wants the engine. So he's selling me all the 4wd components with trans and all for $500.

Wanted to make sure stock gearing of that truck would match mine, or if I would have to re gear the front and/or rear diff.

We checked the door jam stickers and the stock ratios are the same!

Picking up all the parts this Wednesday, should go over smoothly from here.

Got wheels and tires from Amazon.com free ship no taxes, wheels 126$ each and tires around 289$ each.
It's nice work like any other crawler it's depend on how you drive it.
