How much play is in the wheel bearing?

 

Inch or so

 

An inch at the outer most part of the tire?

Do your brakes still work after cornering?
The first time I did my wheel bearings I had to pump the brake after corners to get any sort of stopping action. I've been keeping a closer eye on them since then.

Because of the axle hub set up the chances of your wheel falling completely off is slim. Obviously not healthy, but I imagine you're good.

 

Ah so that explains why my brakes feel worse after taking a sharper turn.

The rotor is "attached" to the hub and then the hub to the wheel bearing. As the wheel bearing wiggles so does the rotor, and since the caliper is fixed to the spindle the rotor pushes the brake pads back which will give you a soft pedal because you've got space that's not normally there between the caliper and pads.

 

I could have lived the rest of my life and never witnessed that and been fully content.
