Dual battery for 15 Tacoma

Yes! I need a few actually! Hit me up via PM. What's been slowing me down is developing a stainless version. It's been a pain in the ass to weld with a MIG gun.

 

LOL.. I had a 6lb version that was 850cca in my 1987 Supra. It fit right inside the rear fender by the back suspension and I was able to hide it all together. That one was way more then this one but it had a charging system right inside it so that you didn't need an outside controller.

In my mind you could easily find yourself 12v power to use for remote power ability and put it somewhere like the inside of the rear fenders (see LiPo4 battery packs) but it depends on what you really need or want to do. Keep in mind that the larger batteries are more capable of storing power so having a small starting/running battery and a larger deep cell setup might work the best.

 

If you relocate one to the passenger side fenderwell or wherever, something like this could happen:

My point is, don't do it. It's not worth the impending headaches to follow later on.

I'm a 2012 for the record. Again, I do offroad pretty hard, but this can and will happen in time whether you do or don't, street duty/ mild offroading/ hard high speed offroading..

 

So you don't think entirely replacing the large batteries with these carbon fiber ones is fully recommended?

well that's if you put the weight on the fender well.. what if you put the weight on the firewall, etc?

 

I already have a deep cycle battery on my 4runner build..I can use that to start the vehicle and for winching..

The second smaller one can be for all my accessories..

Oh no. The new setup is working beautifully. Not a peep out of it minus some weird little electrical bugs from the AFR meter and the radio restarts my song every time I start the truck, but that's it. I may use my small capacitor bank to supplement the electrical after I can figure out how to encase in a weatherproof and solid mounted setup and run it in between the two access terminals, but I'm lazy to work on the truck as of lately.

The firewall? You are asking for it if you do. I don't know why you even rationalize that as an option. Not to sound dickish man because I'm not. I'm just trying to save you guys headache down the road is all.

To answer your question though, if you put the weight on the firewall or by the rear of the firewall, you will suffer the dreaded splitting firewall most of the FJ guys encounter. We don't seem to have that problem, as ours seems to be a bit stronger or better structurally built than theirs, but it will happen with all that weight back there.

Best option to go is either A relocate to the bed, B relocate to the frame as I have done, or C just get a super lightweight battery.

This is my setup. Incognito, inconspicuous, easy to work on, street daily approved and high speed dune jumper approved as well. VERY strong!

No that's way to big. The capacitor bank weighs no more than a few ounces. Definitely less than a pound, but it packs the punch that I need to stabilize the electrical system. It's just bare and uncovered, so any water or moisture that gets onto it can potentially make it act funky until it dries up.

This is what it looks like, but I had to pull it out for obvious reasons.

Do I need an adaptor kit for dual batteries side by side or can i use the space on the far left corner to install a small deep cycle battery as someone mentioned doing in different post.

Are you talking about the physical mounting or the electrical?

You still need something that will control connecting and disconnecting the two batteries. A solenoid is the cheapest route, the marine battery controllers are the way to go.

If you do run two batteries I recommend having the two batteries as close to size and type as possible. I personally run two 27 Optima Blue Tops.

 

@12TRDTacoma Rob, 99% of the people the want/run dual battery setups do not thrash/jump their vehicles. Standard offroading and slow stuff, the radiator support is fine. I get what you're trying to say, but there are plenty of people that run dual batteries in the stock location or 2 in the engine bay with zero issues because they don't mob their trucks lol

 

thats exactly what ive been thinking.. theres so many people running duals for years and accross 4runner and tacoma generations..and this is the first time ive seen this issue..

 

I mean, case in point, Robs sig pic is something you shouldn't be doing on a mid travel build in the first place, but I've done it on my old prerunner, and I know the damage that results. He's right for his type of offroading, anything fast with any hard hits, that radiotor support is tin foil, but standard trail runs, keeping it under 30, you can rum dual batteries in the stock location ALL. DAY. LONG.

 

I emphasized "later down the road." I didn't say fast, I said it would happen over time. Nowhere mnear as fast as it happened to me.

A lot of people still run the stock bumper with all the covers under it. Over half the owners will never even think about looking there.

 

It fully depends on what you want to do with it. That single battery that you linked would struggle to sustain the Tacoma. I would think at least 500cca would be required and 40-50 AH would be adequate. In the duel battery setup I wouldn't suggest using these because cost vs power they are expensive and will not last as long under draw. They are intended for people who need light vs long lasting.
Do some research with a good battery store that knows about lithium setups. I am working with dry cell lithium's right now which have no explosive properties and the same battery would be under 5lbs.
