Crazy how much slower we are than 10 years ago, that is even with the 05's having grooved tyres.

 

IDK , 2 or 3 seconds a lap versus V10's didn't seem as big a gap as I had thought it would be

 

In 14 wasnt it up around 4 seconds? Either way 2 seconds a lap is a good bit to think about considering the 05's would lap maybe even twice the current cars in a race.

 

So , Pirelli has claimed they can gain 4 seconds alone with tires , the FIA / FOM want 5-6 seconds in total , so it will be interesting to see if all time fastest lap records fall in 2017

 

Yes , and thats also a point to be made though is that , especially in F1 , there is always a natural evolution from season to season regarding engine and overall car performance . The 2005 lap speeds occured at the end of the V10 era so basically at the culmination of that engine formula's performance that had evolved over it's approx decade in use . That is being compared to a completely new engine formula in only it's second season . If you look at the performance gains of Ferrari for example from 2014 to 2015 , its not hard to imagine that given a 1/2 dozen more seasons , even an unchanged spec of car currently in use would progress to a point where those lap times would be compareable
