Friend of mine said he dumped a bunch of booze on the ground in his settlement and left, then when he arrived back everyone was hammered and stumbling around. Going to try it myself.

Same here. I think it has something to do with the fast travel target.

 

Or perhaps the items they use?

An armor station or weapon bench within the settlement? A couch or specific chair they want to use?

Perhaps the answer is...when you leave, don't have anything there they would have need to use

 

So in other words, just leave a plank up there with your shit in a pile?

Hell if I know, I'm spitballing here.

But when I travelled back, I had settlers at my crafting stations. When you travelled back, you had the old lady sittin on the couch, like she is wont to do in the houses down at ground level.

Perhaps its as simple as not having something they're allowed to use at any elevation within the settlement area. Just going with logic here.

I'll try it in the morning when I do some more gaming. I'll store my crafting stations, bed, etc so there's nothing up there for them to be OK using and travel in and out a number of times....see what I can come up with.

 

Found a full set of X-01 Power Armor tonight.

This makes sense. Two settlers were sitting on my couch every time I fast traveled back to my treehouse tonight.

yeah I have a shit ton of fusion cores and only used up one. Basically my campaign has been the whole northern hemisphere of the map - furthest south I've gone is college square/Cambridge station which is where I saved for the night.
