Just bought a 99 Tacoma, RWD, 4cyl, 2.4L, Manual 5-spd., 150,000 miles. Replaced the rear shocks but everything else looks good to go. A little lean but don't think I need to address that at this point, guessing it's struts. Nice cap on the bed too. I'm taking this on a cross country journey and looking forward to it. Any tips or things I should be prepared for I would appreciate the advice. Thanks.

Putting spare gas in the back when areas get more remote. How bad you think the gas mileage is? 25 highway seemed a little too good to me. Thinking closer to 18?

Hard to know without more detail. That mileage isn't high but if you don't know how its been driven or maintenance that been done it's hard to know what needs attention. Did you give it a couple tire kicks and look for fluid puddles under it or did you actually give it a thorough inspection? If its totally new to you and you don't have the tools to check it over thoroughly I'd go to a local trusted mechanic. Easier to get maintenance and repairs done at home rather than limping or getting towed into a shitty little town that only has a Cooter's Gas Groceries and Fireworks franchise.

With that truck your right foot will dictate mileage. You can probably get anywhere from 23 - 15 depending on how fast you're going on the hwy and how much weight you have in it.

I'd check/replace belts, spark plugs, and coolant for starters. All are cheap and easily done. Make sure your spare is intact and holds air. Make sure you have a jack and tire iron where they're supposed to be. Get a GPS unit because sometimes you won't have phone service. Download some audiobooks from Audible.com.

I bought it sight unseen and did get it looked over by my local guy. I am getting a GPS device and haven't checked if the spare is there but am going to this weekend. Same with jack and tire iron. Also getting the self jumping cables. Thanks a lot for the feedback.
