There's lots of reasons to love MT's, I love rowing gears. Just as long as better mileage and/or performance isn't included in that list.

Pretty sure that automatic HUMVEE with the .50 cal turret I drove in the military wasn't designed to cruise mall parking lots.

Manuals are great. Was taught how to drive in one, as will my boys. They are not superior to today's autos however. If cost, nostalgia, less complexity, etc is important to you, then the manual is the way to go. Today's autos give better mileage and performance then the typical manual. Just a fact.

Just slightly off-topic, but the high end sports cars use dual-clutch transmissions, which are more like a manual than an auto in that they have no pumps, pumping losses, torque converters or coolers. Thus, they are more efficient than the more proletarian manuals and autos that we find on avg vehicles. Semis, dump trucks, snowplows, nascar and rally cars all still use manuals for simplicity and strength.

I said as much. If cost and simplicity is your primary concern, go manual. But do the research. It's not just in million dollar super cars that automatics are superior. All the examples you give are invalid. You're comparing your Tacoma to a tractor trailer? Or a nascar racing rig? Yeah, that's a bit of a stretch. And by the way, tractor trailers (semi's) are also making the switch to auto for the same reasons as in the light duty market.

Those steering automatic million dollar sports cars probably do not know or want to know how to really drive. If you prefer easy & dull for better fuel economy, etc. get an automatic. If you want to get to know what your vehicle and the road are all about then it's manual all the way.

Saw every model of the '16 Tacoma, in every color, on a 60 mile stretch of the big island during the first 2 weeks of November.

More than I've seen on the mainland since going there or since I've been home.

On my first tank (stock everything), I was getting 17mpg. At the 600 mile mark my MPG started going up (just how others experiences were). Now i'm running 275/70/17's on KO2's, OME lift and getting 18mpg (75% city driving).

    1) Nice
    2) I believe it.
    3) I plan to do better.

Driving is a skill. And with practice, amazing results can be attained.
    Thx for posting.
(With my '02 4cyl MT SR5 I get 21+/- in town, 24-25 highway, drop those numbers only 2-3 mpg towing my 2300lb popup trailer. )

Note : Sole purpose of me posting this is to suggest encouragement toward what is possible. Without doubt, there are those doing better still.

Holy crap, are you guys sure your using MPG with US gallons and not imperial gallons?

Some of these numbers are crazy. I'm getting around 14L/100km, which is 16.8 MPG (US).

Seems like my MPG is getting better with time, or I'm learning how to drive it conservatively?

I was getting 14-16 city and 18-19 highway. Now I'm averaging 22 highway and 19 city.
Not the best but a lot better than when I drove it off the lot.

Drive from Raleigh NC to Hildebran NC. Mostly 65mph behind a 18 wheeler for a good stretch. Wasn't too close, more like 4+ car lengths away.

I trust the mileage estimator because it tends to be accurate to a mile. I could see where going from 65 to 70 had a noticeable impact.

I should also note this was largely flat driving with only the last 40ish miles having any really elevation changes and even those were minimal.

I peaked around 27 mpg for the trip when I hit a construction zone and did 55 before stepping up to 70 and watching the 27 slowly tick backwards.

One last note is that the engine was already warm from a short drive to Waffle House.

I personally feel like 24 mpg is the realistic number for this truck. I would never really hang in the slow lane like I did today, but, for science and the forums I did.

I keep mine at 40. Helps eek out a little more mileage. Tires are rated to 51 iirc. On a cold day like today they start at 38 and heat up to 41.

When I had my Yaris the dealer would always under inflate them and I had to tell them to stop checking and forcing me to fill them back up.

I don't know, yet, how I will drive this truck on the highway. We won't be using it for driving our local long trips like to and from grandmas house because I can drive 70 in our Civic and get 45mpg on the highway. If we take the truck somewhere, I don't know how I'll feel about getting less mpg and going faster. We'll see in less than a month, I guess

3" lift, goodyear wrangler duratracs 285/70r17, k&n filter, bakflip vp tonneau and tint.
I now have 600 miles on mine and I'm only seeing 14.3 at best. I hope to get 250 miles to the tank. I do have a lift and 33". I'm still hoping this gets a little better and I see 16 at least.
