Axle Wrap, "Lurch", "Clunk When Stopped" question

Don't wanna beat a dead horse BUT...

With all the threads on this (these) topics. I have one question, is it possible to prevent this from happening on a stock Tacoma/4Runner? I have read a lot about this on this website, I am concerned. I keen cars for a while.

Here's my story...

I go to the dealer for (yet another) repair (Transmission TSB) and he's taking to me about how the trucks can have a "lurch" when stopped at a light. The service guy tells me that "It's a common problem on the Tacoma and 4Runner, and it's normal". "It kinda feels like someone bumped you from behind".

I'm like WTF man? On NO VEHICLE is that normal. So are they (Toyota) trying to tell me to get rid of this thing before the 60K warranty is out? I'm not paying to have the entire drive line replaced until 200Kish.

I have the CD for maintenance on the truck. I torque everything to spec and follow the maintenance schedule religiously. Will I have this problem?

I don't want to bash Toyota BUT I have owned Ford's my whole life, this is a non-issue on their trucks. Not even talked about on f150.net but seems to be a common problems here.

 

the only time i notice it,is when the a/c is on.and its not bad at all.like a little rev in the engine.

 

but not what this sevice tech is saying? It doesn't fell like you are getting hit from behind? He has got me worried.

I crashed my 2001 F150 Lariat into 3 deer and Travelers totaled it.

 

Now, with proper maintenance, this can be eliminated or severely reduced? I'm just trying to understand or educate myself. This truck (which I love) is not a new design. Toyota isn't really breaking and technological barriers here. I would be led to believe that this shouldn't really happen.

 

grease the slip shaft in the driveline. my 04 had this terribly! greased it up and its gone

 

Oh no! I'm not having any problems. I was just concerned about what they dealer said. These Tacoma's seem to be a little more heavy on the oil change maintenance than I am used to. That's all.

 

Mine does both axel wrap and shifting lurch. I can distinguish because when the axel falls back into place it kinda pops down and the transmission makes the wheels actually turn.
I wish I could find some replacement leaf springs that would be the same height but much stronger.

My 2005 has wrap periodically. My 1998 had it several times a day, and much worse than the 2005.

Definitely happens to mine only when AC is on.

 

Mine only does it if I have the A/C or Defrost on, and have been sitting at a stop for 10 seconds or so.

 

That is exactly my experience.

 

The lurch I feel only happens when the A/C or defroster is on. With the transition to fall I noticed it so I'll turn on the defroster to test it... stop, lurch, stop, lurch. Then I turn it off and no more lurches. Same with regular A/C on... with the compressor engaged I get a lurch after coming to a complete stop about 85-90% of the time. With the compressor off it never happens.

mine is solid, it doesn't lurch even with the A/C on and I can hear it kicking on and off.

however i do feel a thump when stopped after 2 seconds intermittently.

 

if you get under the truck there are about 4 or 5 grease "zerts". these kinda look like a brake bleeder in a way. hook your grease gun to them and pump until you start to get a little grease from the seals and your done.

 

Thanks Tak! I have ford grease, Marine Grease (Blue) and now I bet i need to buy a third grease gun and special grease for Toyota...?
