Buying an 05 Sport TRD 6spd. anything?

Like the title...I am buying an 05 TRD SPORT Indigo access car w/ 6 spd Man. Anything i should check for/be aware of, before i buy this hog? This is my 1st Taco...Not my 1st toyota though.

Gotta love the "Power Bulge" of the Sport lol

 

Run a Carfax. Are you buying from private or dealer? I just got a 2007 TRD Sport for $19k from private owner...it's has 36k miles.

 

Buy an off road its what all the cool kids are doing these days .


Carfax for sure, Id check leaf springs and see if it has the 4 pack not 3. I'd say just trust your gut too while driving it.

 

yeah it is a dealer...Everything seems solid driving down the road...I am trading in my 08 Tundra Crewmax..to get a little lower payment...So i have to go to a dealer to get a decent trade in number on my Tundra...

 

Yeah check the carfax, also you can get a magnet and run it on the sides, if the magnet falls down then there could be some bondo under the paint. Also check different areas for different color or newer looking paint. Body fenders and other body parts not fitting good or looking a little off.
This will sometimes indicate a past crash or impact.

 

I had an '06 trd off road with 6 speed. I did not like the tranny. I thought first gear was way too low but that was not the main issue. When shifting it made alot of noise underneath. Sounded like a vehicle with a bad u'joint. I test drove others on lot (after I had it for a couple months) and ALL the manual trannys sounded like that to me. Obviously, make your own determination but I thought I would make you aware of my observations. GL.

 

Yeah i am not to worried it has a small dent in the rear bumper so i am guessing it is original and the front fender corner has a scuff on the corner from a parking lot rub...Yeah the paint as plenty of small scratches etc so safe to assume it is all original...all the panels are nice and straight, no signs of dents or repairs (no holes drilled in inner door jams, etc)

I'm not saying don't get a Tacoma but if you are just after a lower payment why not re finance your truck with a lower apr?
I would look at it like this...
How much do I owe on my current truck?
How much will I owe on the Tacoma?

 

I just bought the truck in June so refinancing won't do much...Yeah i could stretch it out to like 84mos...but the Interest rate will go up as well, in all reality it would only save me $50 or so each month trust me i have done the math plenty of times at this point...
To get rid of it is my only real option. I bought the truck for a really good price so i wont have to roll any inequity into the new truck.

what sort of Highway MPG should i expect with the V6?

 

From the looks of it 20 max. I just got mine though and the previous owner claimed to be getting 21.

 

that wouldn't be so bad i expected lower like 17-18...20 would be great compared to the 16 of my 5.7

 

probably around 17-18 mpg.. A couple things I would check.. (i have an 05 trd off road 6 spd)

Check the wheel bearings.. These trucks are notorious for having the front left wheel bearing go bad (i just had mine replaced this week and it is not cheap).. Just grab a hold of the front left wheel and see if there is any play.. Also, from talking to a buddy of mine who is a mechanic, I learned that the front left suspension in these trucks can be iffy too.. There must be added stress on that side. The off-road package has Bilsteins and the problems haven't showed up in them, but the stock shocks tend to leak right off the showroom floor.. I would also check the leaf springs, and see if they are squeaking.. It's another common problem with the 05's.. I think there was a service bulletin about the issue, and it worked for some, and not for others.. It's not a big deal, and I just spray some lubricant on the brackets every so often that helps it out..

 

My 05, 5 yrs old, no problems.

As for hwy mpg. That will depend on what 'hwy' your on.

You''ll never see 20 mpg on interstates at 70+ mph, 6th too short

But, state/county hwy 55-65 can see 20+ mpg summer, knock off 2-3 for winter.

 

I've got no firsthand experience with this but i've noticed a lot of complaints on this forum about the 6 speed manual, be sure to test drive an automatic as well before you make this purchase! I've seen so many threads where people have gotten rid of their 6 speeds to opt for the automatic transmission!!

 

i have a 2005 V6 6 speed and i have noticed that the manual gets worse mileage than an automatic on the freeway which is odd to me because i always thought manual usually gets better mileage than an automatic.

i drive 65mph and drive probally about 60% city, 40% freeway and the best mileage that i have gotten is 16.1 mpg.

I think im a pretty light driver but looking at my mpg, maybe i'm not.

EDIT: OH and i forgot i did have a problem with the tranny, just below 50,000 miles the throwout bearing went out but i think that was because the previous owner drove the truck very rough, while i was in there i changed the clutch and the pressure plate also.

 

It's going to be less with the manual than with an automatic. I get 18mpg almost all highway driving. My guess would be 15-18. Some have seen lower.
