If you drop a nuclear bomb on a town, you don't have any more worries. Trust me, a quick death is preferable to waterboarding, having your finger nails pulled out, and general torture by individuals that don't fall under the general conventions that prevent such atrocities.

I'd just rather have neither... which is not where I think this conflict is going sadly. Who knows though, I readily admit to being pessimistic about the middle east and the world reaction to the crisis.

They had me at free shipping to Canada. I have nothing at this point for a traction aid. Maybe these will be better than Maxtrax, maybe not, but at those savings with a lifetime warranty it was hard not to get myself a Christmas gift... that will arrive maybe in April.

Yeah, my brother just busted his Edge again. I avoid the whole free family leasing thing. He keeps asking to "borrow" the Tacoma for a few days and I know it will come back with his abuse induced problems.

That's not to bad. Do you have kids of driving age or is the wife just rough on her Honda?

Even that article states the average cost to each Albertan at $300-$500 depending on income , try paying 7% PST on pretty much everything but food and get back to me

Then it's about a 1.5% income tax. Interesting. I was reading a physical article that called it a 3% increase... I wonder if it was counting the increased cost the oil producers will pass down. When I read the Macleans article it seemed to skip that possibility as well. I guess we will see how our pocketbooks feel next year.

I wonder if a PST is still coming in the 3-5% range and this was just a way to keep that PST percentage low. Who knows. I wouldn't be surprised if the GST goes back up and Alberta gets other additional taxation in the next year...

Anyways OZ, you're right. You always pay more than the rest of us and you don't complain about it. If you can do it, every family can afford to pay more.

It is a goods tax. I said what it works out to like a percentage income tax. Anyways I think the topic has run it's course. Go ahead. Continue to beat me over the head with whatever you feel is witty. I know you need to get your Tacomaworld rocks off.

Good discussion team. Everyone have their Christmas lights up yet?

Our rule is to try and get them up the same week as my birthday. That's this week so I'm going to try for Friday. Last year with her morning sickness I had no one to hold the ladder on the days I was free from work and it never got done. I'm hoping to avoid a repeat.

I wish we had trees out front. My house is right on the beginning of a 30 degree turn and has a smallish front yard because of it. The huge backyard makes up for it but it would be nice to have a tree out there. Sadly the slope on my lawn is pretty extreme, about 7 feet of elevation change in maybe a run of 15 feet so I don't know if a nice evergreen tree could get established without growing funny. Maybe I'll build a little terrace for one someday, but how would I keep the roots from taking out whatever use as a retaining wall?

Late to the party on the refugees, hopefully I can still add some insite.

First, I'd reccomend reading the plan yourselves (Primary source over secondary): http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/refugees/welcome/overview.asp

Speaking of secondary sources: The number I saw was up to 10k by the end of the year; based on my experience with Gov Orgs, the idea is to aim for big number to stress the staff and get some decent capacity out of them. There is no obligation to "rush in 25k"
"Fighting Age Males" that cause the primary fear, are also limited to those that are part of a family (ie have children)

Just an FYI cause you seem to have suffered severe reading comprehension issues last night , I was commenting on the info in the article that Saskquatch posted about the Alberta Carbon Tax Plan , I really don't care if you disagree with me

I'm not sure how I wasn't supposed to take this as directed towards me...
It's all good anyways. I'm doing a bunch of paperwork over the next couple of days for a big event, career wise, that is coming up for me. I came off pretty strong last night because it sucks looking at making more money but potentially having less because the government needs me to pay more for everyone else... it's selfish, I know. I just don't think higher taxation during the recession is going to achieve the goals of diversifying our economy or stimulating economic growth during this tough time that the NDP promised as general goals.

I actually did quite a bit of reading from a few media outlets about the tax and the information is all over the map. CBC was even reporting that the NDP were recommended by a group to refund 66% of the people who will pay the new carbon tax on their provincial income tax return and that the rebate level was still under discussion. It sounds like there is still a lot of clarification coming on the tax and how it will be spent exactly, hopefully once the answers are a little more clear the money will be going to something I can live with a little easier like the Macleans article suggested or refunded to more people. I don't think the middle class can take more tax pressure right now with the job losses that have occurred here. Again, selfish as it may be, I really don't want this money to cover more raises for teachers (above the cost of living increases) and the guaranteed job program for nursing students that the NDP has chose to allow to continue even though the economy is in recession.

Also, this morning I heard the ad the Albertan government is using to put a positive spin on the new Carbon Tax. It sounded like an ad right out of the playbook of the Federal Canada Action plan under the Federal PC's.

In theory, yes. The problem is the refineries themselves. The facilities down in the southern United States are so large and so efficient, it is still more cost-effective and (in theory) easier to send the stuff down there to refine and then to buy it back. Seems backwards, but it's the truth.
