Come on. I was born and raised in Alberta. A quick trip down a gravel road and all the painting and rust prevention you apply won't stop rust caused by rock chips on the frame. If the steel is of the right alloy nothing more than surface rust will ever be present. I am trading a 91 4Runner that has rust on the frame. The truck is 25 years old. If I am around 25 years from now I might be the oldest driver in Canada. Time and my genes will tell.

I have owned a lot of vehicles. Various makes and models ( mostly Japanese) and not one had rust on the frame when I bought or sold it. These range from old winter beaters to buying brand new and driving the vehicle for 5 to 10 years.

It's your money, but what I saw under that Tacoma discouraged me from even thinking about making a purchase. Hell, my 12 year old Land Cruiser doesn't have that much rust. I made my informed decision and I'm passing on my findings to others that are thinking about making a purchase.

The reps that were there were women in their early 20's in tight business clothes presenting models off a memorized script. I doubt they would have known more than what they read.

To be honest, the OP looked exactly like rust, but I went out to my truck to see whats under there, and having been a welder, it is clearly weld residue by-product. I don't expect everyone to believe, but here is a closeup. These are all over. In know "trust me" doesn't get very far, but these are not rust.

You can even wipe it with a white rag and get no residue which is impossible with rust. It does "look" like rust though, so if you are in doubt, do the white rag test. Rust will show up as reddish-orange in an obvious way.

Whether it will cause problems in areas where rust is an issue, I cant say, but it may be compromising the coating.

Do you know if the frame paint does not stick to this residue like the previous poster said?

I added an edit right after you quoted addressing it lightly. It looks like it bleeds though the paint, almost like it floated on top of the solvent and dried there. Hard to say if there is paint underneath without scratching. I will try that and report back.

I would have to think that the coating is less robust where the bleedthrough takes place, though the residue glaze may have self sealed. Personally I am in a pretty rust free zone, and am not worried, but generally inconsistencies in coating are not good. That doesn't mean that frame rust is a problem in these (3rd gen) trucks, just that the coating may not be perfect. Time will tell.

Edit: I scratched off the spot in the pic, and it does appear that there is no paint underneath. It just sort of came off like a bit of resin with a bit of screwdriver gouging. I would make sure and treat with an oil treatment if you are in an area where rust is an issue as the paint is not going to be a perfect solution. Treat it like its a pre rock-chipped paint job. Hopefully the steel is better than 2nd gen.

Thank you for the closer inspection, photo, and experienced analysis for those on the fence about buying one.

I tried to be objective as possible. There is no indication that the frame has any issues rusting (currently), or that these spots are rust at all. The coating isn't going to be perfect with these imperfections, so preventative maintenance will be a must (is anyway in rust zones). Time will be the ultimate judge, but I would like to think that paint wasn't the ultimate/sole solution Toyota came up with considering how prevalent the problem was.

Someone needs to go down the dealership and show them where it's flaking/chipping and ask why?

I usually work along side a lot of welders, and I am currently in a welding class and ya, it does look very similar to the copper from a welder.

I know tacoma has a bad rep for rusting...but seriously with only 6miles I highly doubt its rusting already. But time will tell.
I think it looks more like from welding than rust.

    Are floor mats a mod?
Whatever it is, it appeared on the back side of almost all of the frame welds on my 2011. I chipped it off, used sophomore primer, painted it, and it hasn't come back,, so I guess the OEM paint just didn't adhere to it. I check my frame 2x per year, and treat any issues. Takes about an hour. Nothing major so far.

    'omg my truck is rusting'
    did you rust proof?
    'no'

then no fuckin shit its rusting.
I've heard this with so many different vehicles. All the people that complain about terrible rust do not rust proof.

I know the Tacoma is bad with rust but seriously people know this and still do no preventative maintenance like rust proofing.

reps at car shows are usually incredibly stupid and know absolutely nothing about the cars. Last year at the auto show here in toronto, the Nissan guy was saying the covers over the timing and crank chains on a GTR were the turbos.

An audi rep told me the A6 TDI was a V8 twin turbo diesel, when its a V6 single turbo.
And a Dodge dealer tell me they upgraded the truck to rear shocks and springs when you can fully see it has leafs.

They are usually just random guys that work as managers or something for the dealers. Not techs or anyone that actually knows a thing about the cars
