They are meant to be replaced. That's not to say you can't try to vacuum it out a little bit. Easy with the "banging" as you don't want to cause any irregularities to the rubber seat on either side of the filter. And make sure you vacuum both sides before you put it back in just to make sure you get any small amounts of dust that may have settled on the engine-facing side of the filter medium before reinstalling it.

But honestly, I would buy a new one. Wix are the brand I've been using and are $10 on Rockauto.com

 

I am half way to 30k but I just feel like that would be replace them at 30k for street driving.

 

I am just going to wait and get a replacement rather then vacuum... that way I don't fuck it up and put a hole some where that will ultimately let more dirt in anyways.

 

Agreed. If you offroad I would change it sooner.

 

I'm sure you won't fuck it up vacuuming it. you can at least vacuum it out for now for peace of mind until the new one comes in the mail. But yeah, you're right, the 30k replacement guidelines are talking about street driving. They don't take into account all the nasty air our trucks suck in off road. Your mind is in the right place but let your eyes be the judge. if it looks dirtier than you'd like, replace it. regardless of mileage. for only $10 each, better safe than sorry.

PS, on Amazon I've seen boxes of 10 of the Wix filters sold for around $70. It'd be nice to just have them lying around for when it's time.

Yes it is! how long does a cv boot usually last under normal use and california conditions?
This is not something i look forward to replacing.

 

my truck has 160,000 miles. driver side has never been replaced. passenger side had a rip in it and i bought a new cv axle from auto zone and exactly a year later, another small hole appeared. not even 15,000 on that auto zone cv boot and it tore. i put a bunch of silicone before the hole got too big and its holding up. i just saw all pro offroad has long travel cv boots that are heavy duty. i will be doing that on my next ripped cv boot.

edit: i never changed a cv axle before and didnt have a problem when i tackled it on my truck a year ago.

 

I replace my air filter after each run through the desert when it's dusty, especially being in a large group and driving through hours and hours of dust trails followkng othe trucks. That often means I replace my filter 2-3 times a month. Why take a chance? Have any of you guys removed your filters after a something like that and smacked it against the ground? It's like smacking out half the Mojave that you took home in your filter.

And unfortunately ive also replaced my CV boots more times then I care for. I recommend the AllPro outer boots and the SDHQ inner boots. I have also omitted the OEM style boot clamps for standard hose clamps, holds the boots in place just the same but a lot easier to deal with in the long run.

This bothers me and the taco. What kind of froading you doing? Or is this lack of using and it getting crusty?
Ive seen other posts so is the cv boot crack thing just a hit or miss type thing?
