What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Swapped out my bumper lights from HID to LED bar from PR Lighting Solutions. Going to keep the roof lights HID for the further reach. Might change my mind later and swap those out for 2 sets up top.

 

Where were you seeing these vibrations at? I just got back from a road trip and had terrible highway vibes the whole way...but I've never had them til now and I haven't changed anything on my truck that would cause them. Also my carrier bearing has never been moved. Can you post pics of your drop? Thanks

 

I cut the inner structure first, then made a cardboard template for the metal. I bent tabs and epoxied them to the backside of the grille rather than using screws. After that it's just lots of sanding the body filler really!

 

Could by any chance post a picture what it looks like in between the grill and the radiator? Where did you get the mesh? Did you cut it yourself?

 

I don't have any pictures on hand but there is only about a quarter inch between the mesh and the radiator piping. I got the metal from Industrial Metal Supply locally and cut it with my dremel tool.

Check your u joints - I developed some really nasty highway vibes on my way back from Moab and couldn't figure it out for a while, then when I pulled the u joint at the rear diff it was completely toasted.

 

Anyone have experience with CVJ axles?

I've been happy with mine. Had them just over a year now. Not a ton of miles on them but no issues. They've been put through some rough shit offroad too.


Today I sprayed the shit outta my frame with rust converter and Rustoleum undercoating. Then re-installed my BAMF bolt-on sliders

 

How do I check them with them on the truck?

 

Block your wheels so it doesn't roll.
Put the transmission in neutral.
Crawl underneath and twist/rotate the drive shaft by hand back and forth.
You are looking for ANY play in the U-joint when you move the drive shaft.
To check the play in the two center u-joints, grasp each drive shaft tube with each hand and twist them against each other, back and forth.

The rear Ujoint usually goes out first according to my local Toyota mech. Mine was toast and I think one of the others is on the way out now too...

 

Guys with icon 2.5" coilovers, how much thread is showing on you coilovers to achieve your lift? Any added weight on the front? I have around 2 1/4" on driver and 2 3/4" on passenger side, with my plate bumper. And i was wondering, is that alot?

 

Really the best way to tell what kind of play you have in the u joints is to remove the driveshaft from the truck and put the joints through their full range of motion. If you're just checking the u joint at the rear diff, just drop the four bolts out of the diff flange and pop that end of the driveshaft off, then you can check it.

My wheelin buddy drives a heep too! Yeah I have found a few but a little more miles than I want. Looking for one with no more than 125,000, TRD etc. Looks so good in the sun too!! How many miles is on yours?!

 

Thats the only bad thing about the color but waxing every spring and fall should take care of that lol! That's why I loved my white one cuz I know it was scratched a lot but you can't see it lol! Either green or white again lol! Not a lot of miles at all...I'm kinda going for service records too! As long as the truck was taken care of 150-180k isn't too bad of mileage! Just wish I could go back and redo what happened! Kick my self in the ass everyday! But it will take me a while to find another perfect one! Im searching through the whole nation lol!I accept the challenge!!!
