In today's day and age research is easy, all it takes a Google search.
So since rust issue is specially dear to my heart I figured whats the best way to find out about quality difference in GM/Chevy vehicles vs Toyota ..

Not sure why you think the Tacoma is much better as a truck? It is a better OR vehicle and that's about it. The GM Twins have more payload with a deeper 5'2" box and higher towing at 7,000lbs plus a fully boxed frame with 4 wheel disc brakes.

You guys are wrong, they are locked in 4 hi, but they are not locked the same as a traditional t-case that does not have the "auto 4wd" feature. I know this is the case on my 2012 ram 1500. I will dig up the video to show how the wheels act when spinning on ice, definitely not 100% locked.

I know you can't drive on dry pavement in 4 hi, but what I am saying is that the front and rear wheels are not 100% locked together. I will prove it once I get a chance to look it up.

Perhaps you should visit the following link: http://gearpatrol.com/2013/03/29/four-wheel-drive-vs-all-wheel-drive-everything-you-need-to-know/

    A portion of the article:

4WD mode works in the simplest terms thanks to a dedicated transfer case, which splits the power between the front and rear axles. Specifically, it locks the front driveshaft to the rear driveshaft, forcing equal amounts of torque from the engine to both axles, causing the front and rear axle of a car to rotate at the same speed. This provides greater traction to drivers, since it ensures power will continue to flow to the wheels on an axle with traction should wheels on the other axle slip.

Looking forward to seeing this evidence for a GM vehicle. Haven't been able to find anything that says something different than what everyone else has said about locking front/rear in 4 hi

The transfer case is always "engaged" even in 2WD,
BUT The front drive shaftdoes not "engage" unless the rear tireslip is detected.

(in 4-Auto mode) When the wheel speed ABS sensorssense a significant speed difference from front to rear,
the solenoidtriggers an electric clutchto engage the front shaft in the transfer case.
Once wheel speeds match up again the clutch is released, seamless operation.

There is zero difference in drag in 2WD vs 4WD Autoon dry pavement

Only 4 Lock Is capable of sending power to the front end when its not really needed.

The only difference in operation in the new Borg Warner T-cases
is you can no longer get the tires to bind in a tight turn in 4lock on dry surface like the old New Venture T-cases.
It's almost as if Ram couldn't trust the average consumer to use 4Lock properly and put a protection mode on them to keep T-Cases from grenading.

The big disadvantage is that same protection factor now is a liability for off-road enthusiasts.

The new Borg Warner T-caseis pretty much in 4 auto mode regardless of 4 auto or 4 hi lock is selected.

I am not a green horn on this subject. I understand what you guys are trying to tell me. But what you are missing is the fact that new transfer cases (in my case Borg Warner 44-44) are a new breed of transfer cases. Do some research before you write my comments off as some ill informed green horn.

I can confirm what I am saying by driving my own truck, in the winter, when my rear tires are on my concrete garage floor, and my front tires are on the driveway, backing up hill, I can hear my rear tires "chirp" on the concrete for a split second before the truck moves backwards. Now I know my front tires are not spinning on the gravel. Is is in 4wd lock,NOT AUTO!

Do large trucks like a F450 or bigger have rear disc brakes?

This video shows how the newer t-cases work, even when in 4hi lock.

Is that the same transfer case in the canyon? I thought GM uses NVG transfer cases for autotrac 4WD systems. Does that operate the same as you are indicating?

I am not sure on that. I can't find much info on the newer GMC Canyon t-case. Have to do some more research I guess.

Off topic, I was in a Chrysler dealership garage they were pulling the rear axles out of new 1500 looking for some markings. I was told they had to do it to all the new 1500. Ones with a certain marking had to be replaced.

I do sales and I'm in Ford, GM & Chrysler garages every week and see all the recalls TSB. It's unreal and I am sure Toyota is the same.
Funny I had my 08 Tacoma in for the seat belt, frame under coating and leafsprings. I had replaced my leafs with Dacar's so I am waiting for Toyota refund.

The BW 44-44 is more of an AWD or 4-wheel on demand case from what I found. It operates by engaging clutch packs when slippage is detected even when in 4 lock mode. I suspect that's why your tires chirp backing into your garage....requires slippage before it engages.

If you want a locking system in the Ram then you would need to get the BG 44-45.....operates like the ones that have described here.
