*THE RTT Owners Thread (With BS)*

Found a Smittybuilt overlander rtt brand new for $600. Hoping it's as good or close to the same quality as the tepui/CVT tents yall have! Will post up some pictures and review when I get it on

 

Will your RTT have an annex? We use the annex for baby and dog sleeping area, while we're upstairs. Baby in the pack n play. Works great. Not sure how keen I'd be on leaving the lil one way up high in the RTT while we weren't in it. Even though it's got zippered screens, still she'd be 6-7 feet up. And we put her down to bed by 7-8 so there's the rest of the evening to enjoy.

We did 3 weeks on the road, California to Az, to Moab and back when she was 10 months old. Camped all but a few nights. It's absolutely do-able, it's just work.

Great advice by door ding. A few nuggets from our experiences.
1. Battery powered noise-maker. If she's a light sleeper, some nice white noise in the tent can work wonders when trying to get her down for sleep, or nap. Especially if you have noisy camp neighbors
2. A wash basin for warm baths. While I'm ok without a shower or hot water for a few days, your little one not so much. A nice Rubbermaid tub with lid works great, and can double as the tote for all your baby bath time supplies.
3. Small cooler in the cab of the truck for on the road snacks/supplies. It sucks to have to pull over just to grab a snack or prep a bottle.
4. Some sort of containment device/chair for meal times. Ie: bumbo chair, or a seat that clamps to a picnic table. Many meals were consumed on the tailgate, and being able to set her down safely for a meal is a must.
5. The annex. Again, not only for sleeping arrangements, but diaper changes, clothes changes, snack time etc. it sucks to have to climb up into the bed for those activities. Can't say it enough. Annex is a huge help. Even just having 10 square feet of real estate that's made of dirt is an awesome bonus.

Anyways. There's a few thoughts on the matter. Most importantly, GO CAMPING!!! Get out and do it. You'll never regret a trip or experience no matter how much of a challenge it was.

Oh and try to to break down and cry when you see how much extra shit you have to pack all because of one little 14lb human.

At this point I like the RTT for weekend trips but I'm going to be looking at trailers next year. I want a shower & shitter.

 

Not a pop-up, I'd like a small enclosed hybrid - like 12-14' just enough for the 4 of us.

When you're traveling by yourself, the RTT is just fine. But with your family? A wee bit more comfy isn't such a bad thing.

 

Not really concerned about wind profile - looking for what offers the least amount of effort. I don't want to do anything except park, level it, and unroll an awning.

Or could get a Four Wheel Camper. Seen many tacoma's carrying those

 

I've seen a few & they're pretty badass but I can't see hitting any serious trails with one.

 

One of my Dutch friends turned me on to that site. Haven't looked at it in a while.

 

Thanksgiving Weekend was the right time to build an electrical box to go in the bed of the truck. I can put it into the back when I need it and take it out just as easily. It sits along the left side of the bed and I store the 2 gauge cables from the main battery (separated by a 500amp solenoid) in the small cubby by the tailgate.

• I have a momentary switch attached to a voltage display facing the tailgate so I can quickly check the battery voltage.
  
• There are five switches on top, I only use two for now. They connect to cigarette plugs, one facing the tailgate and one facing the cab.
• I have another socket which I'll use for the water pump.
• One cigarette plug is for the ARB fridge and doesn't use a switch. The other is for an electric blanket which runs up into the RTT.

It is pretty low profile and sits mostly out of the way, and the best part is it is easily removable.

 

So camping in my RTT for the first time in sub freezing temps next weekend. Normally we use a heated blanket to a battery for sub 30 degree weather but the wife isn't happy about 0 to negative 10 degree weather. Battery only keeps up warm for about 6 hours. I was looking at a MR heater that takes the colman grendaes but it doesnt have a tip off feature. Any advice or what are you useing?

You could try a power timer for the blanket. Turn the blanket off for 10 minutes every hour to extend the use.
