The Walking Dead Show vs. Comics (Heavy Spoilers likely)

That's funny, I had just been thinking a thread should be started for this. Thanks to @SpruceTaco for the link to Comicmad.com! I've been watching the show since the beginning and started reading the comics a few years ago but never made it far with the reading until recently. Now that I've read the books all the way thru I'm really curious how the storyline will cross over to the show. Also anxiously awaiting the next book to see what Rick plans to use his prisoner for.

I gave in and read past my stopping point last night. I'm now 4 books into the "all out war" story. They just let Holly walk into Alexandria unknowing she was a Walker. I'll read some more tonight. Can't wait for Negan to hit the screen, he cracks me up! I think his tv persona will be toned down though, which is too bad...

 

Yeah there's no way they could put Negan on TV without toning him down. Haha

 

He's a diabolical genius. Literally just read this page after I posted that. Had me rolling. He still better have this comedic spirit in whatever way they do tone him down.

 

Yeah he is funny, he has some good lines.

 

Just finished the All Out War story. Next up is book 127. That story should make for pretty good TV. The kingdom/Ezekiel will be a cool place and character to add to the show. If they don't get to Negan being introduced until the finale of this season then they likely won't get to the war until season 8. I don't know how long this show will be on, but it probably won't last as long as the comics will. I guess they could spend the 1st half of season 7 building up to it and the 2nd half being the war itself. They are going to have to move quicker than the current season though. I'd hate to see them try and squeeze that whole story into only a few episode. It had a lot going on in those 12 books

 

I've read to the end of the last compendium, and just put the 3rd compendium on my Amazon wishlist. If I remember right, I think I did get one more book read following the big books by hanging out at Barnes and Noble and reading on the floor....without buying it.....

I'm still a better person than the guy I caught with the playboys in the bathroom there.

 

I'm on book 142. Getting kind of weird with these skin wearing crazies, especially when that girl stuck her tongue in Carl's crusty eye socket. So nasty. I think from a show perspective they will probably end the series with the war against Negan. I think it would just get too complex if they tried to keep it going with different communities. It would turn into Game of Thrones and be too confusing.

 

Had a slow morning so I ended up finishing through 148. I was hoping Rick was going to smarten up and go ask him for help

If the show is going in the direction of the book then a whole lot of people are about to die when the show returns. I don't know how they are going to work in (or if they will even try) Carl's eye situation since they opted to not have Ron shoot him. I think if Carl doesn't die he needs to have this happen. He's too much of a douche for Negan to take a liking to him right now.

 

I think that part will happen in episode 9.

 

They made a point of showing Jesse checking her gun before she put her meat robe on. I used to think they did everything for a reason but they spent the whole opening scene on the dumb kids old cookie covered in ants for no reason so who knows where this goes

 

This is the point where Carl gets shot, it was Douglas that shot him but since there is no Douglas on the show I wonder who will do it of they choose to got that route.

 

The cookie was imagry for what was about to happen.

Alexandria = the cookie
Ants = the walkers

It's sweet and stale, just sitting there and ready for someone or something to take it.

Oh I agree. IMO, TWD tries really hard to be as imagery based and dramatic as Breaking Bad. And it just isn't. The writers can't seem to do it without forced drama, like making us wait for Glenn.

Tangent: Breaking Bad is the greatest show AMC has ever been associated with, and probably will be for a very long time. Watch the episodes of both series back to back on Netflix. BB is so seamless that it's nearly impossible to tell where commercials sat or where episodes change. Walking Dead; not so much.

Don't get me wrong, I love TWD, or else I wouldn't be here. But know your place and where you rank. Cut out wasting time with artsy fartsy stuff that you can't pull off and stick to blood n guts. That's why we're tuned in....with the added story of how the people will deal with it.

As for the kids, Judith needs to go, little brother needs to go. Basically anyone under the age of 12 that can't hold their own needs to go.

I found the scenes that last nights episode ended with in the comics and showed them to my girlfriend and explained Negen a little. It could either be tremendous in Feb, or it could suck. I'm hoping the prior.

 

I agree - there are too many characters in the show that don't exist in the book that could really screw up where the story goes and having to dial in Negan from his no filter ways might make him less BA than he is in the book. February can't get here soon enough!...nor next month's issue since I am now caught up and want to know what is next!!!!

 

The Gov was sooooo pared down to make him PG13. I remember thinking....Wait? When will Michonne nail his balls to a board? Why didn't she cut his arm off? WTF. Negen will look like Mr. Rogers compared to his Comic self.

I understand not making the show identical to the comics, but give me the iconic scenes at least!

I was sure as shit they were going to end the season with Carl losing an eye and making folks wonder if he's survive, but I think they ended it the way they did knowing damn well that a lot of us have either read the comics, or looked into what happens, so the cliff hanger is more about "how will it turn out"
