I was disappointed to see the Blind Spot Monitor is already defective. Started the day I bought it (on the way driving home). The yellow warning light on the display between the gauges came on and says "Check blind spot monitor". It is sporadic. Every time I start the car, it might not show. More times than not, it is on. What a bummer.Brand new truck and have to deal with this stuff. Have an appointment with the dealer for tomorrow.
Anyone else have this issue?

 

Some guy's BSM wasn't working at night and the dealer told him Toyota is working on a software update for it.

 

I got my '16 (DCSB 4x4 TRD OR) exactly two weeks ago and already have 1k miles on it. So far I'm loving it, although I'm definitely in the new toy phase.

I got a chance to take it trail riding this weekend, performed great! Not off roading mind you, just a pretty rough trail with some steep pitches/loose patches/large rocks/gullys. I didn't get into a situation where I felt like I would need crawl control, although I did test it out on a 20 degree or so several mile hill of loose shale and dirt that I regularly do. It felt very confident, no tire spin. It did make the horrible engine noises that a few reviews warned of, but only toward the beginning when I first put it in crawl control and when transitioning significant pitch/angles. I'm not so sure crawl control is something I'll need, although I'm a fairly confident off roader.

As to the tire issue: I was concerned about the guy who managed to get a puncture between tread. From what I can tell, he was in some pretty sharp shale, so I took my truck out in similar conditions on purpose so I'd be close to pavement if anything went wrong. Nothing went wrong even though I was purposely putting my tires on some pretty gnarly stuff just to try it out. So my confidence in the stock OR tires is now greatly increased.

Engine power is more than sufficient for my needs. I live in CO and go up/down mountains regularly with loads. I got to go out last weekend and had a moderately sized load in the bed (didn't weigh in, but probably around 1,500 lbs) and felt almost no difference in shift points or available power when riding down the highway or when climbing hills, and still had plenty of extra power for passing in narrow windy roads. My one complaint is that the breaks seem a little under sized, I noticed a significant increase in stopping distance (estimate increase of 15 ft from 60mph) with the load, which is to be expected.

This is my DD and I've also taken it on some longer trips already. I didn't notice any excess highway noises at 80mph, in fact it was a much quieter ride than my buddy's '11 4x4 OR.

I am frustrated by the lack of seat height adjustment, although all tacos have that issue. I'm 6' and have the moon-roof (so even less headroom) but so far have only bumped my head once on the roof from an unexpected deep rut in the trail where I only had 1 finger on the wheel and was talking to the cute lady riding shotgun (ie: not paying attention to the road). Whenever I drove my buddy's '11 under similar conditions, I'd bump my head with nearly every bounce no matter how well I braced for it, so the '16 is a significant improvement.

As to fuel economy: I averaged about 19mpg over the first 800 miles of city driving (I regularly commute in stop and go traffic) and admittedly have a lead foot. When I'm in 4x4 (which I haven't had on when on pavement, also haven't gone faster than 35mph in 4x4) I average about 10mpg, so overall pretty good for a truck.

Speaking of the lady friend, she loves the truck. She loves the creature comforts and says she feels very safe, doesn't get worried at all when I do stupid stuff in the truck. Its pretty darn important that your lady likes the truck.

I got the double cab, although I haven't had anyone ride in the back for an extended time. It seems like there's okay room in the back for an adult behind the driver's seat (again, I'm 6' so my seat, while not all the way back, is nearly there). Not tons of room, but enough for a kid for a long road trip. There's tons of room behind the passenger seat even when it is adjusted to be comfortable. I've had the mother in law back there while the lovely lady was in front. Mother in law has bad hips, bad knees, is *ahem* a tad on the heavy side, and is Polish so she loves to complain, but she didn't have anything negative to say about the backseat other than that there weren't air vents in the ceiling. She was only in there for 20 minutes (40 both ways) so take that with a grain of salt.

I'm not too worried about the plastic bumpers. Personally I've never damaged the bumpers on any of my vehicles except during an impact with a deer or another vehicle, in which case it makes no matter what material the bumper is, so long as it absorbs some of the kinetic energy to help save the lives of the people involved in the accident. Additionally, I don't know a single guy who's serious about off roading that still has the stock front bumper. I also don't know anyone who takes their DD into extremely rough stuff. Either way, I won't be taking my taco into seriously rough stuff (no rougher than trails like Imogene Pass) until after the truck is fully paid off, at which point I plan on switching to a nice aftermarket front bumper anyway.

Tl;dr: Only minor complaints about the truck so far such as crawl control being underwhelming. Fears others are having seem unfounded to me. If there're any questions I can answer, let me know!

Makes sense why so many members didn't want the first year of the new truck. Lots of bugs

 

I traded in 2013 ford raptor that I wanted to keep. I miss the size and power. The fuel mileage is much better but who gets a raptor and worries about the gas. Anyway circumstances arose that pushed the trade. The 2016 is like a mini raptor in the rich features inside so not all bad. Glad to be a member of the taco family again. I'll dive this one until my son gets it in ten years.

 

I'm back after another thousand miles on the truck. I'm still very happy with it. I'll say that the biggest thing that annoys me is that I only get 17mpg or so on my commute, which is stop and go. I do get closer to 25 when I'm on a long stretch of open highway, so thats nice. Also I'm still annoyed that they didn't include a grab handle vertically over the door on the passenger side.

Finally I've noted that the wind seems to "wrap" around the cab of the truck more. What I mean by this is that with all the snow we've been having in Denver lately, I notice that my rear windows get caked in snow as I'm driving. This happens to most trucks, but you can still see out. Not so on mine, they get completely caked with snow to the point where I feel I need to stop to brush them off so I can see out the back again.

Hard ass seats on SR5! After a 3 hour drive from Orlando to Miami FL compared to the base 2014 Tacoma I had which I drove 8 hours to northern Georgia. The 2014 was way more comfortable than the 2016.

Are the TRD seats better, more cushy?

 

If you want to keep truck for 10 years, you should start saving for new frame swap at the cost of $13k in 6 years.
