Why are tires different? If you tear out a sidewall offroading on stock highway tires it's exactly the same thing as trying to use sidesteps as sliders... Take your own advice

My point is that if you want to talk about morality maybe stop riding OP because your argument doesn't make sense based on the parameters you are setting. You question and judge the morality of asking, not demanding, warranty but you suggest there is no problem with making a similar claim on abused tires. Anyone here can tell you that offroading in rocky areas is going to end badly with any P rated stock tire. Demanding a dealer to replace said tire after you tear it doing something it was not designed to do falls into the same abuse category you are throwing OP in.

Let's face it. The moment you touch undeveloped road, if you want to keep a clear conscious with the almighty, you really shouldn't ask the dealer for any warranty under the arguments you are making.

My point is that if OP just asks for warranty the ball goes into the dealers court. If the dealer accepts the claim then that isn't immoral. It's just the normal business of the dealer weighing his obligations against his good will. If the OP was demanding warranty then that'd be different because he'd be arguing for something undeserve, but if you go back to his original post then you'd realize that he did not suggest a demand. He only was going to ask.

Notice the word "if"? That suggests OP is going to ask the dealer for new sidesteps. If the dealer turns him away, what has OP done wrong? Ask for something he didn't deserve? Christ, people on here ask for stuff all day from Toyota they don't deserve. Go find all of those threads and throw down your opinion. It won't hold water.

Maybe it's time for a few people to step off the high horse here. OP got it. You don't agree with him ASKING for warranty on his side steps. Fine. Asking, and not expecting, for warranty of something abused doesn't make OP some immoral douche bag though. Personally, I ask for warranty on things that break on my truck knowing full well that my truck does not see nice developed roads everyday and when they honor that warranty I feel thankful that they look past the abuse I put on that could be considered beyond the scope of the warranty. I'd suggest that if you offroad you will do the same when you need new wheel bearings.

 

It is one thing to tell the dealer, " I broke this out wheeling. Can it be covered?", but if you are coming in with an "alternative" story then absolutely not. If you don't tell the real story then it is straight up fraud.

That is why I qualified it and made no assumption about the story one might tell.

 

OP went wheeling and bent his tubes. Generally curious if warranty would cover. TW gains a holier than thou complex and tells OP he sucks. Everyone agrees that OP should get sliders. The end.

 

Don't know if it's been said but you got lucky as hell that it broke. If that held, you would have damaged your rocker panel so badly.

People asking for something they might not deserve is not a crime. It crosses that moral barrier when you demand or lie your way to a solution, which OP never suggested doing. However, for some reason, a bunch of people decided to pile on OP like he was some sort of criminal. I find that laughable at best. To be honest, every single person on the face of the earth has asked for something repaired or replaced at no cost after they knowingly abused it at some point. Especially if you have ever claimed any warranty work on a vehicle you knowingly abused off road.

This is amusing.

OP is calling it a "bad weld"...its made to support 400-500 pounds max not 2-3 tons with momentum behind it. For what its DESIGNED TO SUPPORT, it held up just fine. Sure the second one could be pulled off by hand...because it had been severely weakened by the impact.

I get the idea of rolling the dice for a warranty, but you can't be even remotely upset when they say no.

Actually I never ridiculed the person in question on the day of the ban... it was more a threat made on a morning before coffee .
