    Hey guys,

Just bought my 2010 PreRunner Double Cab about 2 months ago and have put about 3100 miles on it.

Anyway, I think I am going to sell it soon. It may have been an impulse buy - I love the truck, but I REALLY need something with better gas mileage as much as I drive and as much as I plan on driving in the future.

I'm not trying to post on here in order to sell it, but I'm trying to get a feel for what it should be worth. I can only do a Kelly Blue book value for 2009 models - and those are generally pretty favorable (about 25 - 27k) - but when I talk to dealer's about trade in's they are only giving me about 20k.

So, what do you guys think a decent asking price should be if I go the craigslist route? What is a fair trade in price?

    Thanks in advance!

Not to jack your thread but I'm in a similar situation. I have an 09 that I bought about 4 months ago and probably need to sell it. I have 5,000 miles on mine. I'm curious to see what people think is a fair price.

    Mine is Magnetic Gray, 2WD.

I can't believe that you will only get 20k on the for a trade in....you should easily get 24k if not more. The trade in value for the 2007 TRD sport I just bought is 18-19k.

My thoughts exactly - I could find a used Tacoma with 50k miles on it for 20k....I laughed in their face.

I should also say that this was at carmax - so I'm wondering if I go to a dealer if I could get a better deal? I really think I should get 25k out of this thing?

As a dealer trade-in, I think $20K would be about right.

The truck DOES depreciate some when you drive it off of the lot. The dealer then has to hit you low enough so that when the truck is retailed, a profit is made. I've yet to see a dealer with a "Salvation Army" sign on the wall. $27K to $20K is a bit thin, but the dealer might go to $21.5K or $22K if you make a counter offer.

There is no MSRP for used machines.

how much did you pay for it? off the lot depreciation should not be to much on tacos and they hold their value very well. if you sell it on craigslist sell it for minus 1k off of what you bought it for, or even 500 off because of the aftermarket HU you put in it. Though, if you did not get a good deal on the truck when you bought it then you might have to sell it for even less than 500 or 1k off..

I bought it for about 27k plus TTL...I'm OK with taking the hit for TTL since I get a deduction for it on the ol tax return and I understand that I'll take some hit for depreciation on a brand new vehicle....but this is a Taco, and it shouldn't depreciate 7k in 2 months for crying out loud

Well dealers are scum in my opinion but I find it hard to believe they would only give 20k. Maybe they thought you were desperate. If that's the case just keep it....gas ain't that expensive now.

I just traded in my 2008 PreRunner 4dr, long bed with 25k miles and got about 22 grand for it. A different dealer only offered me $18,500 so I would get the dealers competing against each other if you plan on buying a new car from them.

To let you compare... My truck is an 06 with 86,xxx miles on it. (all road miles) But KBB was showing that I could still get about 18K out of my truck.

why would anyone give $24K when they can get a brand spanking new fully loaded double cab for like $26,500? I would rather have a new one for only 2500 more. I don't get why people are willing to get raped on used japanese cars, I would rather buy one new then pay marginally less for a used one.
All I know is I have had my 2009 Double cab prerunner, lifed on coilovers and 285s for like $26,000 and I can't even get a call on it. In this economy you are pretty much screwed privately selling a car of that price range.

I bought my 2006 brand new for 29k, and two years later with about 22k miles I sold it for 24k. Unfortunately you will get gouged terribly on a trade-in. Like someone else said, the have to get you low enough so they have a margin of profit.

However, if you paid 27k +ttl, don't expect to get 27, 26, or even 25k from it. When the margin between a new and used vehicle is only 1-2k dollars, people are going to buy new.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help, but I do wish you luck. Put it up for sale private party and just hold out for the right buyer. You never know.

If the trade in is the way you do go, work it with Toyota dealers. The taco trade in should not be a deciding factor in the cost of the new vehicle you are about to buy either, don't let the dealer push you on that. Also, if you loose say, 3k on re sale figure that into 3k worth of gas costs and how long that gas would keep you going in the taco if you kept the taco compared to the new car you want to buy. breaking even between the two would be a few years probably... so, instead of loosing the 3k right away you would be putting it toward the mph difference from the taco to the new car divided up over many many months and " you get to drive a taco right now" .

You are correct, When I bought my taco I decided to buy new instead of used because there was just a few k difference in the savings and it was worth it to have a new vehicle. There are people that look for the new just bought now being sold vehicles that cost a few k less and if they are following how the tacos re sale they will know that they hold their value very well.

From what I've learned over the years, your car/truck values go:

o Dealer retail (kbb, blue book, etc.,,, fantasy numbers)
o Dealer trade-in (kbb, blue book, etc. closer to some form of reality, more useful for used-4-used trades)
o Sell it myself (questionable if this goes above the previous, your cost and time is worth something)
o Wholesale/dealer actual trade-in value (for new car trade-ins, not publicly available that I know of)
o Carmax (bend over, you're going to like this broomstick......)

That being said, you need to find out how much a new truck configured like your's is "actually" being sold for, and discount it enough to make a new car buyer consider yours. Used buyers are probably not your market unless you want to discount it to an 08-09 level.

You also haven't said what you're trading for. If you are trading down, you'll probably never make it work at a dealer. You'll need to sell outright to make that work. If you're trading up to another new car, then see above for wholesale values, as there isn't as much mark-up in a new car as there is in a used car, so what you'll be offered will be less for a new car then for a used car.

Think like a buyer when assessing your trucks value, not as a seller or especially as an owner. Very rarely is an owners assessment of value anywhere close to a buyer's.

I bought a new 09 taco and the only reason I bought it was there were no good used one out there with the right price/mileage combo that I liked. I would sell it at 500-1k below your OTD price. Or just subtract the amount of monthly payments you made minus your OTD price.
