Why'd you want to do it to a bike? haha wouldn't it take the bike out of the dirtbike? So it'd be a dirt-monster-thing?

My basic service is $99 per year. How much is the unlimited tracking service?

I think it's $150 a year, but comes with a few extras as well. It'll be worth it unless I keep the service for over 3 years (its a 1 year term minimum to get the deal so I could always downgrade the service after the first year)

That's what makes the Delorme Inreach that much more appealing to me. They have flexible tracking plans- ones that allow you to upgrade, downgrade or suspend. The basic plan is $14.95/month- you don've have to pay for a full year. http://www.inreachdelorme.com/product-info/subscription-plans.php And it offers GPS nav mapping capability. Only downside is the product costs twice as much as the Spot (about $230)- so initial investment is costly but the flexibility of the plans makes it worth it IMO. However, I have yet still to get one . It's on my list.

To get the free device I would only have to pay the upgraded plan for a year. Which is also $14.99/month. From there I could down grade if I wanted to .

this Spot Gen3 also offers GPS tracking. Up to 2.5 minute intervals that can be set to start when motion is detected. Seems pretty sweet to me!!

Hey guys, long time since I have been on here. I got a little side tracked with the truck this past year. Been playing on the sumo too much also dumped an exhaust on the ralliart...BUT. The tundra is going to be back in action after February with black friday over, I ordered everything I needed for the front end. More to come in the build thread once parts start arriving. Once she is back in action I will see you all at the meets! Hope everyone has been good!

So, you've used both and still think the Inreach is better/would recommend it?

Good to know. How is yours setup, are you paying monthly whenever you feel like you'll need it, or did you go with the yearly subscription?

Yeah, it gets pretty expensive if you want to track your trips. But that would be one of the options I think I would use most. I think it'd be pretty cool to to be to go back and save at your trips with perfect GPS points and save it for later.....unlimited tracking looks to be $300 a year though....

While this always seems to fall on deaf ears: My ham radio setup has no use fee. It allows to me to send (and receive) emails, sms, pictures, as well as interavel GPS and status reports accessed by anyone with an internet connection. Being able to communicate (not just beacon) has proven extremely value for the type of travel I do. For backpacking I sort of get it for those commercial boxes. But for vehicular travel I certainly don't. And you can still do a whole lot with a 5w ht anyways. Plus have the benefits of a functioning radio.

Have used the spot trackers...just never trusted them completely, mainly because the only way to tell it's "tracking" you is by a flashing green light. Call me crazy but I like a little more peace of mind than that. Especially if you use it for mountaineering, back country skiing/snowboarding, really anything out in the wilderness.
Would take a satellite phone over that but my .02
