OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

Well shit I'm gonna have them do the tsb for mine since I still have 400 miles of warranty left. I still have the ecgs bushing on its way so if the tsb one craps out then I'll throw it in. Maybe I'll get lucky and have shavings in the diff so they can replace that too.

 

Pretty sure this is covered under powertrain warranty, which is 60k, is it not?

 

Yes you can only have the TSB done if your still in the 5yr 60k mile powertrain warranty. I'm at 59600 so I want to have them do it now before I wont be eligible. Then in case something happens down the road I will have some documentation to take to Toyota in case I need it.

 

I have a brand new 2016 Tacoma and am experiencing this exact problem. Put her into H4 and it goes away. I have spacers in the front to level it. Very annoying.

 

Oh my! I cant believe Toyota wouldn't have addressed this issue in the new trucks. Let see if some other 3rd gens report this. Plenty of them are lifted. Did you notice it right after putting on the spacers?

 

Did anyone had good experience with front diff shims??

 

If I do absolutely nothing and just drive it with the vibration, what's going to happen?

 

I literally drove it 100 miles home from the dealership. The following morning I had simple spacers put on over the coils in the front and added new rims and tires. Taaa Daaa.....vibration up front that goes away when i put it into H4.

Going to see the dealer on Saturday. My guess is they are going to tell me I am SOL because I have after market rims and tires.

If I remove the spacers and get smaller tires, will the problem go away?

 

I have a 3" OME lift and wheels and tires. My dealer is doing the TSB. Here is the thing. The TSB is dated May 20th, 2015. So Toyota, presumably, is just now officially recognizing this problem. So I would not assume they fixed it on the 2016's week enough in advance. But I have no idea if they use the same front diff or not.

 

I'm pretty sure they are going to tell me I'm SOL. The thing has 150 miles on the OD. 150 miles! WTF! I've saved and worked hard for years for a new truck. This fucking sucks balls!

 

Honestly I don't see why they would not cover it. 150 miles isn't far enough for the lift to break anything. Go let them look at it before you work yourself into a lather.

 

Yea don't sweat it at least until you take it in. Reach under your truck and grab the CV joint right where it comes out of the diff on the drivers side and see if there is a lot of slop. try to wiggle it and see. The problem has been that there was too much slop so lifting it would put a side load on the bearing. Not good for a needle bearing. I drove mine for almost 4 years like that and finally did it earlier this year. Now I see there is a TSB for it. It figures I did it in April or May this year. Oh well the bushing is better than another needle bearing. I bet the bearing is just wider for more surface area creating less slop?

 

Not sure yet. TSB 0026-15 is dated May 20th, 2015. So it's pretty new.

My dealer service adviser told me the TSB used a "modified part". So presumably that means it's not an exact replacement of the original. I'm certainly hoping so anyhow. We'll see what happens.

After my dealer checked it out yesterday the vibe went away. This evening my drive home I definitely noticed the vibe again. It comes and goes. Waiting for them to call me when parts arrive so they can make the TSB repair. Since I'm less than 10k miles on the truck I'll let Toyota deal with it. If it's an issue post warranty I'll do the ECGS Bushing if need be.

EDIT: @BenWA or an admit like @JimBeam maybe we can add to the OP something about the TSB that impacts this issue? Might save people from reading 148 pages of posts?

Take it back into the dealer. Spacer lift or not, it's still a new truck, and a faulty part.

 

Sad as it is to say... we'll find out if the 2016 is really an "All New" truck or not.

 

Yeah. Just frustrated that this could be an issue and the wife is busting my balls for putting new wheels/tires and a little lift on it. I will see what the dealer says saturday. I can't imagine anything is worn out at 150 miles. I've only drive it 22 miles with the lift, and never above 50mph. I drive less than 4K miles per year.

 

Well, we know the frame and front diff is not "new". I think it's a safe bet to say the truck will be around for 10 years, plenty of time to see.

 

The motor, front grille, and tailgate are new though. lol Granted the motor is a carryover from other models. Pretty sure the doors/cab structure are the same from all the images I've seen.

 

Toyota is only admitting the problem because of Baja and Pro trucks. Until the first factory lifted models were released in 2013, they just blamed the whole thing on aftermarket lift kits - anything that changed the drive line angles. Then they leveled the Bajas, and the warranty had to cover it. My Baja was bone stock at 12K when I got the vibes. They replaced the entire front diff and carrier because mine could be both felt and heard. Some dealers don't care about non-factory parts, some do.

The 2016 front drive train is identical to the 2nd gens. The rear OR diff is new - from the Hilux with an internal locker - but nearly all of the other suspension parts are carried over.

 

So let me understand this. Can I just take the front spacers out and solve the problem?

I've driven the truck about 20 miles with the slight lift.
