First off, first time poster here. You guys are awesome.

My truck is a 2012 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport automatic.

I let my friend borrow a truck and as he was backing up a wild dumpster appeared. So far I need new quarter panels for the bed, tail light and bumper. Won't know what else needs done until I hear back from the adjuster/body shop.

So I am thinking about a new aftermarket rear bumper. Still looking around, they all look awesome. My question is, what all do I really need for an aftermarket bumper? Is it a direct swap for some? What about my license plate light and other electronics? What are your guys experiences? Should I just stick with stock?

    Thanks,

    C.

Unless you go high clearance, I believe it is a direct swap for most. You could always message then vendors on the forum here. The lovely people @Pelfreybilt might be able to help you out ;)

So sorry to hear about your rear bumper... Our Standard Rear Bumper is truly a direct replacement for the factory bumper but is made of steel so is a heck of a lot stronger.

We integrate the hitch behind the license plate & refer to it as a "hidden hitch" that is designed for the Toyota recommended tow capacity for the Tacoma.

It's super sexy & strong & provides better approach angles just by lifting the hitch! It's a beautiful setup, in my humble opinion, but some may say I'm partial because I'm married to the man (Tyler) who designed it! ha ha ;)

At any rate, we would be honored to earn your business & have had many customers go through their insurance companies without issues. Email me if you have questions: satin@pelfreybilt.com

Here's the bumper & available options on our website, it's pretty popular: Pelfreybilt Standard Rear Bumper

On this example (CBI Trail Rider 2.0) it was a very straightforward swap. Trailer electrical connector disconnects up under the bed, that allows you to feed it through the hole in the new bumper. You cut the wires to the stock license plate lights and solder leads to the light that comes with the bumper.

I looked via CL, via posts here, and with EBay for 3 months before I gave up and bought an aftermarket one.

One guy can do the swap in an afternoon, but with one set of hands it's a bit tricky. Here:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ma-today-2nd-gen.6499/page-3594#post-10803882

    Mine was from CarID

    http://www.carid.com/2006-toyota-tacoma-bumpers/replace-rear-bumper-face-bar-56824507.html

Surprisingly not expensive. Its aftermarket, sure, but plenty strong in place...I have no qualms about climbing on it, towing off the stock trailer ball, etc.

Wow, thanks for all of the replies.

I'm going through my insurance, my buddy is paying my deductible, so I'm looking for an upgrade with hopefully not too much out of my own pocket.

Pelfreybilt bumpers are on my top 3! Pelfreybilt, look for my email!

I love your bumpers but for me I want to keep the factory hitch since your bumper does not have a weight rating. The factory hitch bolts up the the frame rails. Does yall bumper use the factory hitch mounts?

While our bumpers are not officially rated, they have been tested & proven to tow the Toyota recommended weight for the Tacoma without any issues whatsoever. We've personally towed a trailer, and we have numerous customers who tow trailers & boats. As long as you follow the rating from Toyota, our bumpers are built to accommodate your tow load. :)

I just ordered a @Pelfreybilt rear bumper. Wait time is 8-10 weeks. If you're willing to wait I'll sell you my take off bumper. LOL Chrome, less than 10k miles on the truck so far. ;)

Pelfreybilt has the best looking aftermarkets in my opinion. Plus the good reputation here on TW. That's ultimately the reasons I went with them to order mine.

Shrockworks on mine. Super nice, replaces stock receiver hitch- receiver built in (and is lighter than the stock hitch/bumper combo) I got it with Rigid LED's in it and couldn't be happier. Black powder coat looks awesome, 2 heavy shackle mounts and bolts right up!image.jpg
