OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

Don't know, but if you do take them out and the problem persists you will have a valid warranty claim and they should TSB it. They might TSB it with them in, but again, some dealers are cool, some not so much.

 

It's almost like a rhythmic drone than a vibration. Like something is going in a big circle and has a spot that is rubbing.

 

I described it as going over worn down rumble strips while going about 40mph. The dealer picked up on it immediately after that, and chassis ears confirmed that it was the front diff.

 

Just take it to the dealership and have them put in the new part under the TSB!! If that doesn't fix it(which it sounds like it should), then get the ECGS bushing. Problem solved.

 

Exactly how mine is. Waiting on parts still.

 

Did anyone had good experience with front diff shims?? Or I should really do the east coast bearing mod...

 

The shims are to lower the diff so the angles on the cv's are closer to stock when you put a lift on. The bushing is to fix the shit needle bearing that your diff came with, it is incorrectly sized and causes too much slop on the cv. So these two things are related but only the bushing will truly solve your vibrations.

I go to the dealer on Saturday. They pretty much already told me over the phone that if I have after market tires/rims/lift they will not honor warranty. The truck now has 156 miles on the odometer. Lovely.

 

It's not the dealer's decision. It's Toyota's decision. Aftermarket tires won't do crap. They don't alter the position of the CVs, drivetrain, etc. Rims should be negligible. A lift can change angles - but with so few miles I can't imagine how anyone could prove it wasn't there on day one.

 

Sounds like they are trying to screw you. Go somewhere else.
Having those mods does not change the fact the bearing is a defective part and covered under the TSB.

 

Only grey area is he has a 2016. The TSB doesn't technically cover the 2016 Tacoma. Although this may be a sign it soon needs to.

Even so... there's no way someone ruined their front diff already in 156 miles.

 

I'll likely just drive it lightly for a year and then trade it in for a 2017 and then do things differently. Sucks. I can play the game though.

 

How do I get a copy of the TSB you speak of? I'd like to have one in my hands when they try to bend me over, even if the 2016 isn't a part of it YET.

 

Be professional and polite. But be confident that your truck has a brand new warranty and "No" is not an appropriate answer from your dealer or Toyota.

 

You're welcome to print off a copy of the image I shared on this thread. My dealer only printed two pages of the TSB for me (the ones that indicated the problem and covered vehicles and the parts to fix it).

 

I'm always professional. When the gal started out the phone conversation the other day rattling on about tires and wheels voiding the warranty it doesn't give me much hope going into things.

 

The person you talk to first isn't the one in charge. Just keep that in mind. Like I said, 'No' is not an answer. Your truck is WAY too new.

 

I printed out the entire TSB and will take a copy in my pocket. The 2016 is not listed on it.

Sir, those 18" rims and 33" tires broke your truck. I can hear it now.

 

Ask them to prove it. Or just take the lift off and take the truck in stock, then they have nothing to say.
