2016-2019 Toyota Tacoma Fog Light Mod! (Step by Step Picture Heavy)

Hi Guys,

Since I did write up's for all the other mods I did, I'll do a write up on my fog light mod in my 2016 SR. It took me about 2 hours to do the whole thing from start to finish (Not including all the pictures i took to make this write up possible). My SR was not pre wired for fogs so I added a switch and full wiring harness.

Parts you will need:
1. Fog Light Bezels with already cut out holes (Note if you cut out your current bezels they wont match the fog lights at all!)

2.Wiring Harness & Fog Lights & Bezels (I just bought this whole kit that came with the two fog lights and the wiring harness and the switch. If you don't have a standard shift and don't have the clutch cancel button this OEM switch that comes in this kit will fit directly in that blank spot!).

3. Then I purchased LED Fog Lights from The Retrofit Source(If you choose to go the LED route).

4. Mini Add a Circuit Kit! (You can buy it at any local parts store, AutoZone, Advance, Napa or on Amazon).

5. Fog Light switch. (This is if you have a standard shift truck you can use the blank spot to the left of the clutch cancel button. If not you can get a center switch to go under the radio if you have a blank there.)

Step's to Install:

1. Remove your bezels in the bumper. There are 6 little clips you need to reach down behind the bezel and pop each clip and pull from the front with your other hand to get them out! (These are pictures of the new bezel, yours you take out will not have the cut out.)


2. Unwrap your wiring harness and the long side of the harness goes to the passenger side fog light. Run the long side down in the front of your radiator along the frame rail. And let the harness hang out of the opening in the bumper. Then repeat with the other side and tuck the short side right below the drivers side headlight and let it stick out of the hole in the bumper on that side.


3. Next Plug in your fog light to the wiring harness then slide the fog light in sideways with the two tabs pointed in to the cab of the truck. Once its thru the whole bring it back thru inserting the two tabs into the bumper towards the center of the truck. Repeat on the other side.


4. There is 2 screws that come with the fog light kit and each one has to be put in from the back and screwed in that small circular hole on the outer side of each fog light. Put both screws in each light to hold it in place. You can start it by hand then use a short screw driver to get in behind it like a 6" Phillips to tighten them or a little short 2 inch.


5. Next you have to take the lower kick panel off on the bottom left next to the foot pedal rest. Also the door seal plastic cover. It just pops up with clips, just pull it straight up. Behind the foot pedal rest there is a little cap you twist it off with your hands and the side panel pulls towards you and off.


6. Next there is 3 little 10mm bolts on the bottom of the dash. Remove the three 10mm bolts.


7. Once all three bolts are removed there are 11 clips that hold that whole panel on. So just pull gently and pop off the bottom ones and do the same for the top. The panel will come off pretty easy and you don't have to worry about breaking anything when you pull it off.

8. Once its popped off you have to unplug the clutch cancel switch if you have a standard shift, the tpms reset and remove the cable from the hood latch. The hood latch can be a little tricky, you have to bend the wire down and get it thru slot in order to pull it out.


9. Next you have to run the single wire from the harness to the inside of the truck. I used the hole in the firewall that the hood latch wire runs thru. I just got a piece of spare wire and taped the fog light wire to it with electrical tape and stuffed the thicker wire thru the firewall and got inside the truck and pulled it thru. (You can also bend a metal coat hanger and tape the wire to it to pull it thru!) The wire that runs into the inside of the truck is about 6 feet long and you only need about 2 feet of it inside the truck. (Also note you have to slide that little plastic circle back on the hood latch wire to gain access to the hole)


10. Next get the other wiring harness from the set with the green plug on it and you will have one end that connects to the wire you just pulled thru the firewall and one ground and one positive red wire.

11. Connect the black/white wire that you just ran thru the firewall:


12. Attach the negative Ground wire attaches here on the bottom air bag bolt, its a 10mm bolt:



13. Crimp the wire to the fuse tap then remove your Ignition fuse (10 amp) from your fuse box and you will have to add that fuse you took out of the original spot to the mini fuse tap then have to add a 5 amp fuse for your switch power: (The reason why i wired it to the ignition switch is so that the lights always go off when you shut the truck off just in case you would forget to shut them off!)

15. Plug the fuse tap into the original ignition fuse (10 amp) location in the fuse box.

16. You will now insert your switch into the lower kick panel of the truck. This all depends on which one you are using! If you want to use the aftermarket Offroad arsenal swith you will remove the small square one and insert the new switch. If you have an automatic and are using the oem switch that comes with the wiring harness set, remove that blank and put it in there! (NOTE THAT THE GREEN PLUG THAT PLUGS INTO THE OEM SWITCH WILL FIT EITHER THE OEM SWITCH WITH THE HARNESS OR THE OFFROAD ARSENAL SWITCH, THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME PLUG SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE WIRING HARNESS THAT CAME WITH THE OFFROAD ARSENAL SWITCH!)

17. Plug in the green plug into whichever switch you installed in the kick panel!


18. Plug the relay into the designated spot on the wiring harness under the hood. (There is only one spot for the relay and it can only get plugged in one way!) I just zip stripped my whole harness together and let it sit next to the battery!

19. Attach the positive wire to the battery terminal off of the harness and the negative wire to the ground connection next to the battery!

AFTER YOU HOOKED UP THE RELAY AND POWER AND GROUND MAKE SURE YOU TURN YOUR IGNITION ON AND CHECK TO SEE IF THE FOGS WORK BEFORE REASSEMBLING THE DASH! I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH!!!!!!

20. Plug your TPMS plug and your clutch cancel switch in (If you have a manual transmission). Also reattach the wire to the hood latch and clip it back into position.
REFER BACK TO STEP 8 FOR PICTURES!

21. Attach lower dash panel with clips just like you removed it starting with the top clips first and work your way down! REFER TO STEP 7 FOR PICTURES!

22. Put all three 10 mm bolts back in the lower kick panel. REFER TO STEP 6 FOR PICTURES!

23. Attach the lower kick panel on the bottom left with the two clips and bolt. REFER TO STEP 5 FOR PICTURES!

Awesome! I've got all this together except only one of the bezels came in. Thanks for the guide! So there's a 10 amp fuse there, so I'll need a 5? Or did that come with the kit? I actually bought that same fog light kit to hook up to stock fog lights. Haven't opened yet, the lights it came with may be better than the stockers?!.

 

You got to buy a mini Fuse line tap and it comes with other fuses!

 

Another Excellent write up with detailed instructions and photos. With those instructions, I now know I can install fog lights. As soon as I read through the instructions, I ordered the parts, however, apparently I'm not the only one installing fog lights as the bezels are on back order. I can wait on the bezels as the weather isn't ideal for this type of work. Thank you Corey.

OP is the 2nd generation Tacoma fog lights the same as 3rd gen? I just realized I have a busted fog light and would like to replace it asap.

 

Yes they are!!! 2016 is the same as 12-15 fog lights!
