    From the manual:

"You should drive in four-wheel drive for at least 10 miles (16 km) each month.
This will assure that the front drive components are lubricated."

So in order to comply, you must find 10 miles of mud/snow/etc. to tear through.

JK, just turn it on while cruising the straightaway as long as you aren't going fast hwy speeds (manual says < 62 MPH/100KPH). It will affect your MPGs, lol.

This ^^. If it isn't an emergency, stay off the ice. Stay home. Most kinds of snow can be driven safely, but some/most ice is treacherous regardless of anything you are doing. I've seen parked cars blow across the road.

Newby here. My prior Tacoma ('92 2WD) was terrible in snow, so I put sand bags to weight the back for better traction. Will I need sandbags/weights for my new 4WD rig?

It dont hurt a damn thing to run em in 4x4. Its the same thing as a rear axle just in the front. I live in Colorado and use the hell out of my 4x4 when we go skiing up in the mountains. Im not gona set there and twist that knob 74 times down a road. Turn it on and leave it on. If I turn, I turn. Doesnt hurt shit.

Not really necessary. 4WD will keep your rear from trying to get in front of you and the weight of the front will give you great traction up there. It would probably help even out the traction a bit, but totally not necessary.

Thanks for the reply. Makes sense.
I am headed up to Crater Lake tomorrow, so I'll give it a good test without the sandbags.

Took my 08 up there in snow a few times with stock tires. Enjoy the view. You will have no problems. Used to live in K-Falls.

On drive pavement it won't do your tires any good. Judging from your ability to communicate in English it probably doesn't matter a whole lot.

As one who has lived in Alaska(Drove the AL-CAN highway in November) WV, PA, and Germany among other places, if your expecting interesting road conditions, put it in 4x4 High. It wont hurt anything to drive on a winter road in 4x4 high. Obviously if you're going to make any sharp turns in a parking lot, intersection, U-Turn etc, shut it off so the front doesn't bind. If you're making these turns in a foot of snow, the tires can slip and it wont bind.

Per the manual, you can engage 4x4 High up to 62 MPH, meaning if you are going 60 MPH you can turn the knob.

If your roads are completely dry and you are driving on a layer of Salt Dust, leave 4x4 off just so you're not wasting gas and running the risk of wearing things out.

Don't use 4Low on the road. It's geared way to low for any amount of speed and you will be bouncing the rev limited on anything slick. 4low is used for trails, tough inclines and descents and pulling, when maximum torque is needed. 4Low WILL bind if you try to turn anything more than 1/4-1/2 the turning capability.

I haven't received mine yet, but every other 4WD truck I've owned or ridden in has required the driver to stop, put it in Park, switch from 2WD to 4 then proceed. I haven't seen anything saying otherwise on the Tacoma. Doing that several times on a busy 2 lane road with limited turn outs seems annoying.

you can switch between 2h and 4h on the fly with the Tacoma (I believe the manual states up to 60 mph). to go between 4h and 4L, you need to stop.

Oh, I didn't now that. This will be the first truck I've owned that allowed that.

Toyota has had the 2 to 4 on the fly for a long time now. Like 20 years or so my 96 had it.

Hell, if you had the foresight to lock hubs you could go 2H to 4H on the fly in every pre-Tacoma I've ever had going back to the mid 80s.
