How fast was he going when he hit you? I wonder if the Gen2 frame would react in the same way or has the engineering changed that much this year to comply with safety standards where we are bending our frames in fender benders. :goingcrazy:

From an actual engineering standpoint, that is simply not true, but fun to say I guess. It is a bit more complex, and even crudely you wouldn't put a rule of thumb at anything less than 3. Typically in as deep as the diameter of the bolt is best for a better crude estimate. Get a Machinery's handbook and look up minimum thread engagement. It depends on several factors, so varies by bolt.

    Just sayin'

Ugh, please tell me he was hauling ass when he hit you? Sorry about the truck, that is terrible man. Hope you weren't hurt.

I had mine five days when it was parked in a parking lot and someone hit it crossing the spot next to me and turning too sharply the wrong way down the aisle. Just picked it up from the shop yesterday. Luckily only smacked the passenger bumper cover, brackets and scratched up the paint under the tail light a bit.

Can you put some kind of foam into the air vents to filter the noise down a bit?

There was another thread of a '16 Tacoma with frame damage from being rear ended. His pictures of rear end damage looked worse than yours. I posted: "It couldn't be totaled, too little damage." Lot's of posts came back saying auto company's are more concerned about occupant safety rather than truck integrity in an accident. They're purposely making frames to absorb the impact and crumple. Sorry to see this happen. No insurance = no money and no accountability.

Man, so sorry to hear about your truck! The reason I have a 2016 now is because I got hit from behind in my 2014. The truck really did not look to bad. But the frame was bucked in the back and over all was rainbowd. They totaled it out. All I have to say is if they total it you can negotiate the amount they give you

Oh man I feel so bad for @ribin1

How fast was the guy going? I see that you had a police car or SUV in one of the pictures. What did they do to the guy without insurance? Was he driving the Jeep in one of the pictures?

What kind of vehicle hit you and how fast?

Just tape off about an inch around it spray wait 15 for it to dry then peel the excess off. Use a toothpick for the inside of the letters.

From what I've seen with insurance, the one I work at at least, you can have uninsured liability or something along those line. It covers people who don't have insurance and it's their fault. Your insurance will cover it with no points on yours. I think you pay the deductible and they handle the rest. Now, every insurance company is different as well as state laws, but that's how it is where I work. I'm not an agent or adjuster, I'm just the IT guy but it's worth checking into. A lot more people are getting hit nowadays by drivers without insurance.

Ohh, and I took the plastic skirt off the front yesterday while my dog watched:

    Actually you are correct. I had to look up some stuff to see where I went wrong. The correct answer depends on a number of factors;

    Bolt Grade & Material
    Thread Type (Fine or coarse)
    Nut or engagement size (length)
    etc. etc.

I was always taught that 1-1/2 the diameter of the bolt was the correct amount of engagement for full strength but for some reason down the road I changed that in my head to 1-1/2 threads. a typical nut is not thick enough to have 1-1/2 times the diameter of the bolt worth of thread and threading in to a plate or a threaded boss is typically not that thick either so I confused myself. Thank you for the clarification and making me look back to my previous life texts.

Yeah, it is easy to mix up the thousands of things you once learned. Lots of situations don't require 'full' strength, so nuts are often conveniently just the right size for about 1-D. You could argue that 1-1/2 threads is enough to "hold" it in place without popping out, but that is about it. I wouldn't know anything without books to refer to. I only even called you out because it had potential for bad problems if someone ran with it.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope everything goes well from now on.
Do you guys think something like this would have helped?

Probably not at the speed it looks like he got hit with. Maybe if it was below 10mph or something slow. A normal speed impact, I doubt it. That hitch is still connected to the frame.

I wonder if a aftermarket full steel rear bumper could help this frame bending from happening? I am about to move a rear bumper up my list of modifications after seeing the damage the stock bumper did to the frame.

I'm not sure to be honest with you. I know this is apples to oranges, but there is a thread in the 2nd gen with frontal steel bumper impacts. Those things take a beating for sure and give it back much worse to what it hit.
