I'm really struggling over what shelter to get . . . ha

Anyone have any winter trips planned? I don't do below freezing anymore, but it's always fun to hear about other peeps doing it.

When I first got into backpacking someone had to talk me out of getting a 75 liter pack, I ended up getting a 50 and now a few years later I'm looking at 35 liter packs. With my 50 everything ends up weighing in around 33 lbs for five days and I'm not ultralight. I have tons of room left over in a 50L.

My 50 (47) is pretty hard to fill. Always partially empty. I need to downsize as well.

I aspire to be as efficient with pack weight for a 5+ day trip as you, sir. Well done. I pack a 55L pretty full, and I don't attach anything to the outside of it (I like pack covers to fit). With some streamlining to my gear done after the last Yosemite hike, I'm thinking that I won't be getting a 80-90L after all. Hell, a 35L just might be the new goal (unless I have to carry a frigging bear canister again)

I've got 2 coming up. One's a winter desert campout, so no snow to contend with at the altitude we'll be at. Just really cold nights out in the open. In January, we're doing the snow trip. I've got the RTT, and my two friends have tent cots, but one of my friends is going hammock and has made an underquilt that he wants to test out.

I'm totally green and was raised city... I've been looking to finally get my kids and wife into the outdoors... and stumbling upon this post has made me very happy. I plan on looking through this with glee!

True. I was reading reviews and someone got the "copper" limited edition color. Seems like a "crap shoot" when you order. :p

My base weight right now is right between the 12-15 lb mark depending on the trip.

50 L is a good size for most peeps willing to get a small shelter and sleeping system.

30-40L is more for those more dedicated to the SUL life. Ha
