I test drove only 2016 automatics because the dealers (at 3 dealerships) never had manuals available. They said everyone asks to drive them but we never order them. Whisky Tango Foxtrot?
Asking the same question about tacos a few years ago in WI i had a dealer say "We normally order automatics because some of the workers (coworkers at a CAR DEALERSHIP!!!) cant drive stick so it is a pain." I thought that was hilarious.

This. It's such a simple concept, any idiot can understand it. Well, maybe not any idiot.

I just remember it was retarded. I was just glad I am military. I didn't have to do all the test to be able to drive there. That in its self is crazy expensive too. Mando classes plus taxes and fees for testing and issuing.

The road tax was pretty bad, my Tacoma was over £300 a year. And it went up every time I had to renew it. The vauxhall I drove was pretty see. 2.2TD 5 speed. Great mileage over 550 miles per tank. The tax on that was £140 ish a year.

I miss living there and yes they have some petty sweet cars

Maybe some people view it as simple but it isn't. I see it as idiotic to use the throttle to adjust torque.

Think about a curve when pushing the limits of the car. You want to break and down shift simultaneously before the curve. You cant do that in a automatic unless you grab the shifter like you would in an manual. You want to let out the clutch perfectly timed at the apex of the turn in the perfect gear to give high torque to let you accelerate out of the turn perhaps without needing to reshift before the end of the turn. Manuals give you that control. Autos do not. Also if you just downshifted your auto gear selector when you engine braked before the turn, you now have to look at the floor to see what gear you are in because it is really bad to over shoot that crappy automatic gear selector and put it R while driving fast in a turn (it might make a loud clunk sound).

Lets imagine mountain driving, we have those in the western states, we just do not have the populations to drive consumer demand. You want to down shift to avoid brake use on descents. Autos, even the ones with "OD off" suck at this. The combination of the transmission and computer having terrible judgment of what gear to be in, the fluidity of the torque converter relative to a solid clutch... it is clumsy and you normally end up braking more than you need to. You end up using the crappy gear selector trying to pretend you have a manual gear selector. Up hill autos are even more clumsy and slow, they have no clue what gear to be in because they can not predict the slope of the road ahead. But a human with a stickshift can. When you want to drop down in an auto you have to floor it and trick it into down shifting? That is rather silly, to use the throttle to adjust torque.

When stuck in snow or ice or mud or things not found in mall parking lots you sometimes have to rock the vehicle forward and back. This period is timed based on the truck, the slope, the distance you have freed up for travel. I can rock a car to match that period with the fast shifting of a manual from 1 to R. I can not do it that fast with a selector on an auto, especially if it is on the tree rather than the floor. Not perfectly related to the original comment of feeling fast but you CAN select your gear faster on a stick and you know what you are in by feel rather than having to look at the floor or the bright lcd monitor in newer trucks.

If you ever get a chance to race small under powered cars you will see you can milk a great deal of maneuverability and power out of a manual relative to automatic. I am told this disappears as you have more HP in the engine but i predict it is just the the MARGINAL improvement over automatics disappears or that you just don't need to worry about it. I wouldn't know. I am also told by all my racer friends that these new paddle shifters on automatics are awesome if designed right (most on the consumer market are not). I tried them on small and powerful cars and they can be quick but it is not intuitive what gear you are in and i miss the control of a clutch. And that likely means i ride the clutch too much.

I am frequently accused of that.
But I don't think i am over thinking, i simply tried to articulate what others do without thinking.
I will take it as a compliment regardless of if it was intended to be ;) thanks

I felt like I could tow something with the manual. It seems like the auto would try to fight me and pulling out of an intersection would mean I have to wait for a huge gap in traffic.

I haven't towed with my 16 yet, but I did tow a travel trailer frequently with my 11. It was also an auto and had no problem pulling out when needed. I never pulled directly in front of people though. I always waited for a safe distance. I do that without a trailer, but what I'm getting at is it towed just fine. I even have to pass people down my road every now and then while towing and it has no trouble.

I hate to say anything positive about automatics but I do feel that they tow conveniently on flat highways in nice weather if the truck is not under-powered. When pulling a boat out of the water the torque converter has some advantages over a clutch. And they are great for commuting in stop and go traffic while eating fast food, drinking mochafrapachinos and texting.

I am surprised more people are not behind this idea. It would completly open up a new market for Toyota. Just imagine if they also approve the talked about diesels for Tacoma's and over manuals across the board. I for one support this.

I want the TRD OR AC with a manual. Or at least a Hilux. Sure as shit don't want to buy the skewp trim just to get a manual, and even surer don't want a short bed DC.

    FU toyota corp.

You can get a manual access can just not the off road.... Which is stupid... If I have the money then shouldn't I be able to custom order it? In all honesty though I'd rather hav the automatic since driving in town sucks to shift gears constantly.... Which is why I have an automatic.

My 2nd gen was a 6MT, and there were a lot of things I really hated about it. 5th and 6th gear were SO impractically close. They should have made 6th taller to drop the RPM more for better highway mileage. Almost 3K at 80mph is insane.

Parts-wise it can't be too incredibly hard for Toyota to offer a manual in the DCLB.
