What about gas stations? Do any of ya'll think there's one company with "cleaner fuel" than another? I ask the question because I would say I've been a loyal customer to chevron and shell. haha I could be just crazy and wasting money tho. haha :p

My buddy who worked at Chevron told me the quality of all gasoline is the same except for how Chevron has a filter and jug type thing either on or inside the pump with Techron and it feeds into the fuel line as you fill up. I'm not sure about Shell. The octane rating is different like regular, mid grade and Supreme but as for quality it is the same except for the gas stations that use additives. Just what I heard so don't quote me!

It actually burns colder. Google it.

Injector cleaning isn't from combustion, it's from detergents, assuming it's even needed. Some folks like running 'tier 1' fuels for the additives and the cleaning they help with. I chose to run a bottle of Techron or Redline injector cleaner in the last tank of fuel I'm running prior to an oil change.

1: The fuel does not, but it can produce more with the air in the chamber from being compressed to a greater density before detonation. Sorry if i phrased that wrong.

2: Good for your 4.0. Youre in a 1st gen forum. These engines have a 9.5:1 compression ratio. The type of cars i mentioned that benefit the most from a custom tune, like the my BMW M3, have a 11:1 ratio or higher.

This is what I do exactly.

All fuels these days have a fair amount of detergents across all octanes.

I choose to run a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner every 3000 miles.

The key thing here is ethanol free...not the I octane rating. Ethanol laced fuel will get you about 15-20% less economy compared to pure gas.

I agree the most significant change in mpg has been hands down ethanol free gas. However after calculating various tanks of gas I am seeing a .5 to .90 increase in mpg. It has constantly been better with premium according to the Fuelly app. I do mostly highway and barely any short trips being that it is not my commuter.

I run ethanol-free gas in every tank when I'm at college. When I'm home in Dallas, it can't be found anywhere near my house. 87 octane ethanol-free or not. I have ran mid grade and premium fuels and not noticed a performance change. At school, I can get ethanol-free gas in 87, 88, and 98 octane. I run the 98 in my trail bike. I definitely notice a performance/mpg change there.

Yep, stuff costs over $7 a gallon though. Good thing I only fill up 1/2-3/4 of a gallon each time while getting about 60mpg! The gas station also sells 100 octane leaded race fuel. Cool stuff

    improved toyota goodness.
we have a station near us that sells 100 octane leaded race fuel here too...makes for a realy expensive fill up if you grab the wrong handle! my grandpa borrowed my truck about a year ago and brought it back afterwards complaining about how it cost $89 just to fill a little tacoma...
there's also a station that sells 83 octane for 35 cents less than any other fuel... that is the only time i've ever had a issue with pinging in the taco and wasn't worth saving the $6 or so.
...i generaly use 87 from our local go-mart that is ethanol free and often about 7-10 cents cheaper than anywhere else in town.

you can google "octane requirement compression ratio" to find out what octanes will safely burn at whatever compression ratios. ill add a chart regarding the flash points of different octane ratings from a website. it doesn't seem too accurate since it says our 5vzfe 9.6:1 CR engines should be using 91 octane , but at least you get the idea. maybe that's for max RPMs, redlining it.

essentially, lower octane ratings will ignite at lower cylinder wall temperatures when compressed to a certain point. increasing octane rating ensures the fuel will not ignite under normal operating temperatures and/or higher compression ratios.

I pay close attention to my mpg including with a scangauge. The fuel adjustment is a pretty good indication of loss in mpg with e0 vs e10. I see a consistent 6% reduction with e10, which corresponds with the reduced energy from the ethanol.

Winter gas shows about 3% reduction.

"Family Guy - Retarded Horse" came up as a suggestion, so of course I watched it. Tired me at 2:00 in the morning was laying here in bed laughing so hard I almost started crying.

If you really want to get on a bandwagon, how about nagging your legislators to revoke all the mandated corn based ethanol production.

    MPG on vehicles will rise.

More energy is consumed producing ethanol than it displaces in regular gas.

Your taxes are subsidizing farmers to grow corn for ethanol.

While the 'idea' seemed reasonable at the time, it's past time to step back and deal with the failure.

Here is a link to an YouTube video that has a guy using a bore scope to look at his cylinders before and after using Techron. He also has several other videos testing other fuel additives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8i9qftqKNY
