OP: Knowing nothing about the circuit but making some guesses, I'd say that one of the signals from the encoder connected to the passenger temperature knob is degraded. It could be a loose connection or a defect in the encoder or circuit. I've seen those symptoms many times when working with encoders on motion control systems. I realize that doesn't help you at all, but I felt good resurrecting some potentially relevant information, so there's that.

This is how it is designed! Nothing is wrong with the climate control system. Close this thread and move on. Or atleast read your owners manuals...

If anyone would like a further explanation as to why it works this way, I'd be glad to educate you further.

This is how it is designed? When I remove sync, it does not allow me to change the temperature on the passenger's side. Did not know that was intended design. Thank you for your insight.

Something is wrong with your system. I have no issue with the passenger's side changing the temperature. I would take it to the dealer and show them the issue.

Mine is in the shop right now and they're replacing the passenger HVAC controls. The heated seat button came jammed from the factory, and the temperature control knob would tighten to the point that I couldn't turn it. The dealer checked another Tacoma and had a similar issue with the knobs.

Reading the manual is optional in all cases where real men dwell. We get married so someone else can read the manual and get things sorted out BEFORE we enter the man side ie drivers side to take up our position of power. If anything does not work, it becomes a her problem not a me problem. It is then and only then we phone the Service Manager to explain the fact our wives cannot fix the problem and it is then and only then Toyota will truly believe there is in fact, a problem with the truck. Toyota knows at the outset real men who buy their trucks do not read the manuals.

Folks who do suggest men read the manuals are from San Francisco and wear white shoes.

Haha, When I went to pickup my truck after it finally made it to the dealer the salesman tried to go through his Toyota standard - how to operate your vehicle schtick as he handed me the keys.

I gave him a look and he responded with "I don't really need to go through all this stuff with you do I Aaron? I get a sense that you've got this all figured out!" You don't say!!

If you have to tell me how to operate the truck properly I don't think I deserve to take it home!! Just give me the keys and go away, your job is done here - I got this now.

Sorry I mis-read your post. I thought you said it When sync is removed it allows you to change the passenger side. Yes when not in sync it should be in dual and the passenger side should have its own control

My driver side temp knob has that rubbing hard spot . I will get that fixed as with my hood glue spots when I take it in for free oil change at 5000 miles .

Well sad to say but that hard spot came back. I'll have them look at it when I take it in for its first service appointment. Might be awhile.

Might just take more playing, but I was just turning it hard and fast back and forth and it freed up for a little while
