I witnessed a jeep think he was big shit with his 4x4 on the highway trying to weave in and out of cars during a heavy snow fall. well he tried changing lanes too fast, and I got to watch him go into the wall and what looked like a write off (front end was completely destroyed). He got out and looked ok, just some bumps and bruises and a little whiplash. so I was very happy to see the dip shit driving like a fuck nut crash and pay for it :)

Just because you have it does not mean you can drive like a douche. Which many with AWD and 4x4 do.
BMW drivers are dicks in the summer. Subaru drivers are dicks in the winter. Might have better control and handling, but at the end of the day your braking will be just as bad as anyone else.

Seems like all the people that get 4x2 live in the southern states that have no winter and go mostly on sand type trails and driving fast. No crawling and such. So obviously ya they have no need for 4x4

For others though, like myself having 4x4 would be very very handy. FWD is terrible all year round where I live, and RWD would be scary on all the unplowed roads around me.

I've had a regular 4x4 and a Prerunner TRD OR. I got the OR because I figured a rear locker would serve me just as well as the 4x4 where and how I drove. Neither left me stranded.

I do still wonder what sort of situation would put the advantage in the 4x4's court rather than the locked rear diff of the OR 2wd.

A 2wd wouldn't have touched the mud pit I drove through last weekend.

MA never used to do this until a year or two ago. It's New England, most of us are used to it. Stuff like that might make sense further south, but there should be no reason for it here.

If you must, make it vehicle capability-dependent, like certain parts of Canada does (snow tire requirement). Some of us have the vehicle and tires for the conditions and enough years of experience driving unplowed roads in blizzards to know what we are doing. Those who don't will tend to stay home anyway or find someone who does that can get them where they need to go.

I've only had one night where I would rather not have been driving. Mountain roads that look like skating rinks are not fun. But even then, 4Hi + Snow Tires + Taking it really easy made it no problem.

In some areas where it warms up more during the day, it doesn't matter how much experience you have, the roads can be super hazardous. I always hear people from the NE or midwest complain about people not knowing how to drive in the snow/ice, inexperience, etc.

Having driven in a lot of snow in several regions, the warmer climates have more hazardous snow/ice conditions when they do happen. A PNW or Kentucky/Tenn. ice storm can make it unsafe at any speed. Heavy wet snow that melts in the day and freezes at night is 100x worse than nice dry blizzard snow.

Not calling you out specifically, just noting that it isn't as simple as many people think.

I traded in a JKUR for my OR 2wd. What a weird thing to be concerned or surprised about.

Seems bizarre that there are people on an off road truck thread that don't understand off road with no need for 4wd. You guys should come out west, we've got a ton of great areas that you could handle in anything with height if you're careful with clearance, it's mostly about how fast you can go in these instances. Not everything is crawl/mud.

if you're stuck in the mud or sand with your back wheels and still have full traction on fronts?
There's many places where having 4x4 on a trail and mud would help.
But at the same time comparing a OR to a TRD Sport 4x4, having the locked diff would probably be better than open diff 4x4

4x4 truck will sell before a 4x2 in AZ. We like to go up in the snow, and I use my truck for quite a bit of hunting trips that require driving some rough terrain, and when it rains or snows the 4x4 can be critical if you get into a mudhole, sandy wash, or on a slick hill.

$3k is less than 10% more cost up front for a ton of value on the back end

On the used market perhaps due to scarcity but way more 2WD Tacomas are sold in AZ.
