What length barrel? I have a 20" 1:9 twist that will eat anything, but does shoot cloverleaf groups with 55 grain. The groups open up a bit with 77 grain OTM, especially past 300 yards. Conversely, I have a 14.5" 1:7 twist that eats anything, but prefers the heavier 77 grain pills. Pick ammo that works for what you do and the ranges you shoot, and get the right rifle for the round. 1:9=55-62grain, 1:8=62-77grain 1:7=77-90 grain. 55 grain 5.56 is the most common, and least expensive round available. I like to shoot a lot and burn up more 55 grain than anything else.

Similar situation here. That's why I picked up the mini-14 in the first place; I wasn't worried about pinpoint accuracy but I wanted reliable reliable reliable. But mags for the damn thing are expensive with a capital 'E' and I want a little more variety now. But I'm still looking for reliability over accuracy, lol.

Probably going to go mid-length barrel. I'd take a long barrel or a stubby if the price was right, but I'm really looking for just a basic all-purpose AR to start.
I know it's not a lot of info if you're a connoisseur, but I'm an AR virgin who's just looking for the basic guidelines, lol.

I had one of those back in the stone age. Even a bottom shelf AR is much more reliable than a mini-14. Some argue that piston AR's are more reliable than regular gas guns. I have both, and they both have zero failures of any kind so I have no idea which one is more reliable.

You know, I have heard that over and over about AR's, but I've got literally thousands of rounds through my Ruger since I bought it, (probably pretty easily north of 5k, which is a depressing amount of $$ into ammo when I stop and think about it) everything from high-class hunting brass to varnished steel Russian crap and I've never had a single malfunction with it. No FTF's, no FTE's, nothing. It eats whatever I feed it. I keep waiting for it to choke on me, but nothing yet. Dunno if I'm just lucky or what. :notsure:

Maybe. Mine would double feed on a full mag occasionally, but other than that was fairly reliable as well. Even with handloads I couldn't get better than a 3" group with it though. I think it was 1:12 twist but don't remember for sure. Either way, AR's are great rifles and I think once most people get one they never look at mini-14's the same again.

Mine's a newer construction model with the tapered barrel; I think it's a 1-9 twist but I don't remember for certain off the top of my head. Regardless of bullet weight it'll group around 1.5 at 100 but it opens up to about 4-5" at 200. I've just got ghost ring irons on it so I've never shot it much past that. The irons are probably most of why it opens up so much past 100, because I don't have a sharpshooter's eyes, haha! At 200 with irons I'm mostly just pointing it where I think the x-ring is :notsure:

Ok, but you can't convert a mini-14 to belt fed 9mm! AR's are so modular you can convert them to eat anything from 22lr to 50bmg.

I have an Adams Arms piston gun that has a setting to turn off the gas at the block. It's amazing how much tighter the groups are without the bolt bouncing around.

Ya, every state has some kind of weird law. In Oregon, you can bait deer and hunt with a suppressor, but you can't hunt with a crossbow. I can hunt with an AR, as long as I only use a 5 round mag (I have a few of those).

The main reason I got rid of my Mini right here. I never had any reliability issues with it, but functional magazines were too damned expensive and the availability of aftermarket tacti-cool stuff is almost non-existent. AR-15 = problem solved.

It's a worthy investment, you aren't blowing any savings. Especially if you get it at a buddy price!

Ya the only way to win money is by not going to Vegas. I guess that's not always true, you can report gambling loss on your taxes.
