Agreed, it was fun catching up and sliding some waves this morning with you!
Maybe we can try to organize a dawn patrol sometime in the near future. Who knows, I might have to ditch the decaf so I can function that early haha

Did you get a Baofeng? I got one a few months ago and love it, but I feel like it can do 10,000 times more than what I use it for... Have you programmed the repeaters in the area?

Yup, I got that $35 one. I've only used it on the 1 trip so far and haven't done anything with since. So you have your license?

I have the same one, but we only use them as walkie-talkies. I don't have my license either, but think I'm gonna look into it when there's time.

    Get the license.
I only use mine as Walkie talkies but when you're at an event and someone is talking to freakin' Cuba out of their truck in Big Bear, you're sold.

I'm thinking I might try to study up for the test over winter break. I'd really like a HAM license and then maybe I'll get one for my birthday in March

Different frequencies, much stronger, with relay tours all over the place. It is quite easy with a decent set up to talk to someone hundreds to thousands of miles away. You can also have relay stations that take your signal, put it over the internet, and talk to someone that way as well.
Timmy was telling me his set up could connect to the internet. So with an Ipad and stuff in his car he could send texts, emails, and broadcast his GPS location pretty much anywhere. Even when there is no cell reception, you would be hard pressed to find and area where your HAM doesnt work.
You can also have set ups where you have your own relay station in your truck. So say your off camping/hiking/hunting and youre down in a valley.. you could take your handheld, broadcast up to you truck that is parked up higher which would then rebroadcast your signal.
Its also internationally used. So emergency communication in disaster areas is almost always on ham.

Do you have to reserve a site at Jalama? or is it just a show and go?

You have to reserve to be guaranteed a spot. You can show up and pay but that is risky. We normally book a spot like 5 days in advance so that we can get one of the beach spots and not a dirt lot.

Old pics but here are both. Before the RTT :D

    Dirt lot:

Sliders and skids were my first. It's always better to be protected out in the wild! Less to worry about
