Product Introduction - KB Voodoo Bed Rack

I like the fact that it's a bolt together type. Question though, at 46" long, it may be a perfect length for a short bed model. Is there plans on either making a longer version for the long bed model, or an extension to make it say, 12" longer for those who would want a longer length?
Plus, how much would it cost to ship to Hawaii via USPS

 

I do like an extra 12"....

What size are those side mount rails?
A rotopax mount is 24" x 7" wide. Would I need two side rails?

I was looking over the design again and as long as this works with your metal bed side caps and if you could make the rear edge flat with no holes and 3" wide

I can mount kc cyclones across the back edge if it's 3" wide.

The side plates are 6" x 39.5". Your Rotopax will mount right to it. If you want to pick four mounting holes on your plate that you would like to use, and give me the spacing between them (vertically and horizontally), I will add them to the plate so you don't have to drill.

The rack will work with any side rail cap.

The back edge isn't wide enough for the lights that you show. If you could find a red light that it approximately 1" high x 5" wide, you could mount it behind the VOODOO cutout. Now that would be cool.

I definitely plan on a add-on piece for the top for carrying ladders and kayaks.

Let's talk about height:

This is designed at 18" high right now, but that can change. I also want to make a short version.

What are the two heights people would want to see?

 

I may be in the minority, but I like the "just below cab" height you described in the OP. Just below the cab light. It's perfect

I would not have any permanent item (like an RTT) up there, so I don't mind the occasional wind disturbance if I do temporarily lash something on top. I understand that may not work for people wanting to use as on RTT or over cab carrier.

 

It's probably going to be tough to please everyone, but I'd love to hear more opinions.

 

So if I made a mid height version about 10" above the side rails, it would be more popular with the RTT crowd?

The RTT comments are good ones. I will be using such a rack for a RTT. As long as the tent stays roughly at cab level I don't think you'll hear any complaints. Lower would eliminate storage space with no real benefits.

The only annoying thing with a rack that's too tall is then you are like a 4Runner and you might have to break out the chainsaw a few more times on tight overgrown trails.

I've basically have the same setup as @DoorDing (relentless tall bed bars at 8" + 1.5" shims + RTT) and I prefer that height with my RTT. On the sides, I only carry a high jack lift on one side and a shovel and axe on the other.

Seems like 8" from the top of the bedsides with stock caps or closer to 10" above bedsides with your bedside caps is ideal since that will put the top of the RTT at / just above cab height.

If I didn't already have my bedbars and I were looking for an RTT mounting option, I'd be all over this. Aside from being more structurally sound, for my uses, there isn't enough advantage to make the switch and the bed bars are the cheaper of the two options.

Something to consider, having the bars sit at about 15" (depending on the angle) would be just tall enough to mount rotopax 2-gal gas cans (14" tall according to Amazon) on the sides. That will put the RTT above the cab height by ~5 inches but if you have a cab rack + stuff mounted to the rack, the RTT would likely be close to even height with the top of the items on the cab rack. If you came out with the 18" height or came up with a way to adjust the height, I'd be very interested since my next move is either a shell or a full height (or close to it) bed rack.

You had to do this, I was planning on building a bed rack this spring and building a swing out into it but now that I've seen yours I'm really tempted to just snag it.

If I were to pick one of these up, I'd more than likely weld it together because of how I am. But what do you think about the possibility of welding a swing out onto the back of it? I know there's a couple guys on here that have swing ours built to their bedracks and I love that idea.

 

It could definitely be done, but it's not on my design table at the moment.

 

Can you measure from the top of your bedsides to the top of the cab for me?

 

The OEM cargo light will be blocked somewhat.

 

It definitely won't be part of the base rack.

The base rack is almost finalized. A little more input on the height, and some dimensions of the Rotopax mounting holes are all I need.

At the moment we've got 18" high for the tall one, and 8" high for the mid size one.
