Oil Filter 2016 tacoma v6

This style filter is common on newer cars and has been used on construction equipment for years. It is truly not worth crying to the internet about it. It has a convenient drain, unlike most spin-on filters. I'd avoid those aluminum filter housings, if they get cross-threaded because someone's in a hurry, they phuck-up the threads in the housing AND the engine block. We had many well-meaning customers do that. The plastic filter housing will not mangle the threads in the engine block if carelessly tightened on. The best filter wrench to use is one of these, they fit just about everything and the strap is easily replaceable:

I have been changing the cartridge filters on my 2011 Corolla and my 2011 Camry for 4 years now. I have come to like the type of system...Why: because it allows me to inspect the actual filtering element itself instead of just spinning some can on and having blind faith that there was no manufacturing defect that made it out of the factory that no one will EVER see. But then we all know manufacturing errors NEVER happen....hahaha

 

My wifes Highlander has one also and the oil changes have been neat and tidy. A pain in the ass but not messy.

 

You could always do a "remote " location. Not sure if any available yet

 

so to change your own oil first have to drop the skid plate,WOW! then looks like to me oil all over the garage floor after removing the filter. how about the drain plug is that something new and hidden? do i have to remove a cross member?
the maintenance manual says change oil every 10K miles, i am an old fart and change the oil when it gets black. the first free service at 5K is just inspect stuff no oil change according to the maintenance book. what happened to breaking in a new engine, i am going to tell them to do a oil change when i take it for the 5K service.

 

No...oil does not pour out after the filter housing is removed....assuming you drained the housing first. And yes.....10K miles is perfectly fine a modern synthetic oil. But change it as you see fit if you feel that's too long. No...the drain plug is standard 14mm Toyota fair. But you should replace the drain plug gasket though....like every Toyota in the last 30 years or so. And engine "break-in" is nearly a thing of the past. Engines are built in clean environments and have very tight tolerences.....unlike engine from the past.

 

is anyone going to use a fumoto valve on the oil filter cap?
I wish this filter was on the top of the engine.

 

I put a fumoto on the oil pan. You can't really put on on the oil filter because there is a valve in the bottom of the cap that has to be depressed for oil to run out.

 

If you change the oil yourself, it's much easier to inspect the element(between the fins)for a look inside the lifeblood of your engine. If you choose to have it serviced by someone else you have to trust them to know what to look for.

 

I figured Toyota would do this on the new taco engine.

It sure was fun to drop the Ricochet skidplates on my FJ every time I did an oil change.

Not a fan, but hey, save the earth Toyota.

 

The new type oil filter with the housing is so much better than a spin off. I always hated how on a spin off the oil would run down side of filter and make a mess, these new cartridge type filters are awesome just a few more steps but have found its much cleaner.

 

Really? That's the reason I refused to buy a second gen. Upside down oil filter that dumps oil all over the place? That's backwards (and upside down)

 

I hated when a 4.0 came in for oil change. Such a stupid setup

 

Oil change service costs are part of the overall ownership cost of a vehicle. I will pay the $63 for a Mobil 1 oil change at the dealer every 8K miles and move on. I am basically paying the dealer $30 more than it would cost me to change the oil on my truck and the dealer express lube gets it done in <30 minutes with no mess on my garage floor.

 

Which one?

Dumps oil all over the place? Apparently you've never changed the oil on a 2nd gen. Drain oil pan first, then go back and unscrew the filter and collect any excess oil overflow in a drip can underneath the drain where the filter sits. Wipe and done.

 

Versus the 4.0 with dual vvti in any 2010-2014 FJ and 4Runner then, which have the paper element this thread was started about.

ANd you hate the spin on filter on top of the 4.0 Tacoma engine huh?

 

Which 4.0 ? A 2005-2015 Tacoma is no problem, a 4.0 like the one in my 2012 4Runner Trail was a huge PITA and was indeed stupid as you had to remove a splash guard and trim to even get to the cartridge filter. The 2016 Tacoma access is much easier than that despite also having the cartridge oil filter.
