Look at the upper left corner of his screen, worst print is there. Then look a bit to the right and down, I see another print there and it seems to smudge downward. At least that's what I'm seeing.

That would bother me until I got my first door ding and dash scratch, which would be all of a couple hours after I bought it.

Or you could go into the dealer, explain to the service adviser how that drives you nuts, he'll order a new instrument cluster, it will take a week or two to arrive (in the meantime the entire service dept. will me mocking you) and then a tech will replace it, no doubt breaking a few dash clips/scratching the dash, or leaving a greasy fingerprint somewhere else on your dash or seat.

The choice is yours. I'd recommend you just drive it.

That sure is a pessimistic view of the situation. I doubt a decent service department would mock him for wanting a new truck to look like a new truck and sorry, but that is not acceptable for any new vehicle, regardless of cost.

I've been down that road with the 1st gen dash rattle.

OP, get it fixed and report back about how happy you are.

If it is wanting the dash tore apart over a fingerprint that can only be seen in a specific angle of light, then they might mock him.

"The other day I had the sun hit that perfect spot and I noticed I had a huge thumb print on the screen behind my plastic in the gauges.

I basically held a light on an angle and grabbed his picture because unless it hits that spot you actually can't see it at all. On a nice sunny day I am reminded of it. Especially now that I know it's there."

I'm not mocking the OP for pointing it out, but if those are the circumstances, I would just ignore it. You will soon forget about it.

I'd at least ask the service dept if there's any way they can replace that lens without tearing the dash apart. And then go from there.

While you can just ignore it, the OP obviously cannot and I would be in his boat if it were mine. Not all of us are built alike.

It's not like he is seeing it all the time. He literally saw it once in the perfect lighting from my understanding.

Over the course of ownership, I'm guessing he might see it 500 times or more. And is that really the point ?

I can guarantee there are assembly mistakes on every single truck and car coming off an assembly line. Most don't get noticed or affect the reliability of the vehicle.

Imagine being a tech and getting this work order.

"You are about to tear into the dash of a brand new truck owned by a perfectionist. You will only be paid 1 hour for this job, and this is a new dash layout you do not yet know the tricks of removing. Now go make this person happy."

I totally agree with that, you have to do what's best for yourself!

On an OCD note, I literally had a supervisor demand I go buy and use white primer vs available grey primer on a painted part inside a permanently sealed wall because the inside wall was white. He said it would make bug him thinking about it being grey "in there". I happily complied, but told him that kind of thinking will kill him.

Unfortunately for him, it wound up costing him his job. Too much company time wasted on his issues.

You guys kill me me with these posts, LOL!

You all don't know what I do for a job so I understand your view points. I am a service manager in the motorcycle business and I wouldn't mock my customer (and don't) when they bring what most consider the small things up.

I really just posted this up for anyone else to check and to see if I was just the unlucky one. I am not sitting in the truck daily looking at it loosing my mind over it.

However to say let it go and live with it when I plan on keeping this thing for a decade just won't happen. I work hard for my money and it's not an unreasonable request to have it addressed at some point. It's a single part / unit that will get replaced and takes about as much work as a radio swap.

Unlike a lot of you I do trust my dealer to do a good job and I will check that they do. If they don't , no big deal because I know it will be made right without me going in screaming and yelling. Shit happens and on the scale of life that won't even register to me.

As for the tech perspective. I know exactly what flat rate means and the type of job. Hence why I have a list of other items they will make out good on to address, this isn't my only obvious needs warranty fixing item. As well, one of my best friends is a Toyota tech and I showed him this item and he is the one who said get it for the fix as it is a cake repair. It's not like I am asking them find a "rattle", here is the problem, order the part and install, simple.

OP, I totally get what your perspective is, why it bothers you, etc. Even if I couldn't identify with you I wouldn't expect you to care. My experiences in the past (in my own life, with my own vehicles, at my own dealership that I also trust) have never turned up "perfect" with things like these. The dash rattle was one example - and it wasn't a "find this noise" case. It was a documented TSB and the rabbit hole of "where is it coming from" had been solved prior; as you said it's a cake repair. In the end I had no rattle, but it was in exchange for several inconveniences, several headaches - and a few scratches, dirty fingerprints, etc. In the end I would've saved a lot of grief should I chose to live with it and turn up the radio.

I didn't realize you have a buddy who is a Toyota tech and some knowledge of the repair. Comparatively, I know the R & R of the instrument cluster on the 2nd gens is a breeze - I've removed it myself - but it isn't easy to swap it while keeping your 8 month old greasy boot prints off the door sill, or not leave a trace of the dirt and grime on your fingers from the water pump you just put in a Camry with 250k on the clock on the seat. As you said though, those things happen and you will address them if they do. That's just something I've learned I like to avoid, so I've learned to "not sweat the small stuff", as they say.

If you don't think you got what you paid for in return for your hard earned money by all means get it taken care of!
