I am definately doing it to protect the front of the truck, would like to go with the Toyota installed product because of the Toyota Warranty but none of the local dealers are authorised by Toyota to do the install.

Lot of sand and gravel on the roads around here because of ice and alreaady have a couple of chips from it that the clear film would have prevented...

May have to go with a 3rd. party local install.

My truck came with the clear film protectant, it is on hood, side mirrors, behind door handles, along edges of doors. At first I did not want it and tried to negotiate it off price, but the more I thought about it the more I was ok with it, now I love it and wouldn't have it any other way.

I wouldn't install one (if your truck does not come with it already) based on the following reasons:
    1. The clear bra vinyl protector might yellow over time due to sun damage, but that depends on the quality of the vinyl film.
    2. Only a small portion of the hood is covered, leaving the rest of the hood exposed. Covering the entire hood won't be cheap though.
    3. You will see the line where the film ends, which may annoy some people.
    4. Removing the vinyl film DIY won't be easy, based on what I've been told.
If I were you, I wouldn't do it unless I plan to cover the entire hood.

A better alternative would be to plastidip the entire hood and it's quite durable. You can DIY and pick the color, and it's not difficult to do. Plenty of instructional videos on youtube. If you don't like it, you can just peel it off. Peel off and dip it again once every 2-3 years and you should be good in terms of protection.

    1. Today's reputable films do not yellow.
    2. If you cover the front portion of the hood, and the front of the truck, you are going to prevent 90 percent or more of damage.
    3. I would bet you $100 dollars you can't see the edge of my clear bra film on my current car from more than 5 feet away and it's been on there for over two years.
    4. Considering you won't need to remove it for a decade or more, I'm not too concerned.

Nope, it's not an uncommon practice. I've personally seen many vehicles done the entire hood, either for looks or for protection.

Plus, if you do the entire hood in flat black, it'll offer protection and reduce glare due to sun reflecting off your hood.

    1. Well then those who want to do it should find out the quality of the film used before installation.
    2. Based on your guesstimate, that still leaves 10% exposed ready for rock chips.
    3. I wouldn't bet you, but I see those films easily. Good for you if you couldn't see it though.
    4. You might not be able to remove it at all with no mess if it's on there for over a decade.
I'm not here to argue, just offering OP my point of view. Anyone who reads it is free to take it or leave it.

    1. Of course, who would put a clear bra on a $35K vehicle and not research first ?
    2. Yeah, that's right. Would you rather have 40 stone chips or 4 ?
    3. Even if you can see it from what... 15 feet away or closer... big deal. I'd rather have a line then a bunch of stone chips.
    4. What makes you think so ? Ever seen a car with leftover clear bra after a removal ? I sure haven't.

    I'd rather have 0 chip.

The "I can see the line" remark was obviously NOT for you, but for those who have OCD and such.

I'm done here. You're fully welcomed to "agree to disagree" with me. Have a good day.

I was SERIOUSLY about to put on a clear film, of some kind. If it yellows I'll replace it. Feel the edge, who cares. Then after discussing it with 2 different Toyota body shops I'm probably going to pass. Both of them said the film causes uneven fading of the paint. Florida sun, red paint. Then on the second time around if you can't get the exact product to use you will see the fade line. For what these kits cost you can repaint the damaged area and look new again.

    Thank you for this anecdote.

And to CAM37, I'm not here to argue. If you disagree with my comments, so be it. I really DON'T CARE if people want to install clear bras onto their own vehicles or not. It's a free country. I was just telling the OP my perspective and provide a modern alternative, so he can decide for himself at the end of the day.

True... but don't try to talk him out of it by telling half truths and flat out mis-truths. Fair enough ?

None of what I said are lies. I have zero reason to mislead OP. You seemed very angry at me. I'd like to know what I did to upset you.

I said they aren't true. To say you lied would imply you did it intentionally which I don't believe.

I'm not a bit angry. I've had two clear bras for a total of nine years. I have experience with them. So I hope I'm providing the OP with some valuable information, some of which was to contradict you. Doesn't mean I'm angry.

That's great, good for you on having good experience with the clear film.

I and some people I know had the opposite experience in clear bra. It's okay if you and others don't believe me. Like I said I really don't care how people perceive my posts.

About spreading half-truths and mis-truths, I'm sure there are some in TW who are season veterans at doing that.
