I want to change the sound on my 08 2x4 access cab taco a bit. I don't really care about trying to add performance to my truck with a cat back (if it even adds any?)

What are the main advantages of going all out with a nice exhaust system as opposed to just swapping out my stock muffler for a better quality one?

My optimal outcome would be just a nice smooth low sound. nothing overly loud, or ricer sounding.

no noticeable difference between a muffler and an expensive catback.........except price.

i think a dynomax super turbo muffler may be the sound(with some actual performance) you are looking for.

or try both borla or magnaflo they both sound good and get more torque at the low end

then what is the logic behind spending hundreds of dollars for a cat back exhaust system? They don't add much hp usually do they? You can even lose hp on our trucks with them can't you?

If I go to a muffler / auto shop and tell them what I'm looking for, will they let me swap a few different ones out in their garage until I get the sound I want?

the logic is...........people will buy into anything. alot of the cost on most catbacks is that they are stainless...which aint cheap. a muffler swap and a catback are essentially the same.......but some will get them for the ease of install. i'd go just muffler anyday.

as for hearing different sounds...depends on the shop you go to. some will...some wont.

like said above the cat back's are usualy stainless.the other reason is that the catback is mandrell bent pipe as apossed to the cheap way of bending pipe.wich leaves little ripples in the pipe where it bends.but on the other hand most new vehichles stock exhaust isn't bent with the old cheap way.
