Low Idle and Transmission issue

I'm parked on level ground in my garage. Seems to do it after seeing in the cold for 6-8 hours.

 

Same issue here. I'm researching how to check it myself. I have trust issues when it comes to the stealership. Is the Torque Pro app a reliable source for ATF temp?

 

Also, any more info on the paper clip and flat tip screwdriver? Was that a McGyver related joke?

 

Same with mine. Level ground. I'll see if the extra half of a quart makes the difference! They must not check the levels at the dealership because the service advisor said it "must have been low from the factory."

 

I've been thinking. Even if the fluid level were .5 to 1 qt low that's only going to change the actual fluid level by about 1/4" to 1/2", maybe. Every trans I've opened up has the oil pick up as low in the pan as possible. On a cold truck, a lot of the fluid drains back into the pan, raising the level well over the pick-up point. I'm willing to bet that if you remove the over-fill bolt on a cold truck, it's gonna piss out a good amount of fluid (correct me if I'm wrong). Logically, it doesn't make sense. If I wait long enough after going into D to let my truck start to move, no lag. What say ye?

 

I believe it has to do with the amount of fluid in the torque converter or something.

 

I don't think the torque converter drains passed a certain point after shut down. It should be ready to go.
Fluid gets pumped in from the oil pump which is supplied by the oil pan pick-up that is fully submerged in fluid.

 

Fuggin automatics... manual ftw. Almost all of the major issues people have been posting up for the 3rd gen are directly related to the automatic transmission.

 

I've researched that same issue. Seemed to pinpoint it to low headlight fluid. Better check it out as it has been know to cause early onset alzihmers. I hope is not to late for you.

When mine is parked on slight angle with front up I get the delay. When parked with front end down there is no delay.

Also when I started it today I gave it a rev to 2000rpm for a second. Let it come back to idle then no delay.

I think it might be low, I should head to the dealer to get it checked.

 

Yeah, no kidding. But if the pressure sensors in the headlight bulbs are functioning ok, then the tires would be flat like flap cats. Keep your seat belts fastened!

 

Make sure to lube the Johnson Rod Assembly correctly and on schedule

 

Update: The repair manual mentions nothing about pinning (paper clip) the thermostat on the 3G. It appears that only applies to the Tundra w/tow package. From what I can tell it's almost identical to checking the level on the 2G. I deleted earlier info to avoid confusing people.

I found a youtube on checking fluid on the sealed toyota transmissions yesterday. Does our pan have the plastic tube that sticks up? What temp are you supposed to check it at?

Anyone know if the techstream software will give you the transmission temps? Or is this just for changing dealer only preferences..?

I'm gonna check mine next weekend to personally see if it is low or not. If you want something done right.....

 

So procedure is....push in that button, hold in place with paperclip, allow transmission to warm up to certain temperature, and unbolt check plug that has plastic straw sticking up into the pan....and see if any fluid leaks out. If a small trickle or drip comes out the level is good, if not, need to add.

What temp does the transmission need to be at?

Does the techstream software allow you to read that?

If not, how do you get the transmission temp?

How to Drain/Refill Automatic Transmission

On the 3G, remove the jumper wire after its in temp check mode.

 

Its because we are all in to big a hurry. Slow down and smell the roses.

 

Are you still having issues? I don't really much lag shifting to drive or reverse, but its definitely not smooth. I do have the same issue with quick deceleration and clunking into gear. Overall, my only real complaint is the automatic transmission and would love to have it resolved by adding a little fluid!!
