One thing my 4Runner has that I wish my taco has is the auto up and down windows on all switches. And the one thing I dislike about the 4Runner is the awful nosedive. But a King mid travel lift should fix that

I share your thoughts on the 4R/Taco combo. IMO, if you like one you're bound to like the other. I plan on running both for the foreseeable future... variety is the spice of life:) thread needs pics...image.jpg

I have both right now, have had 3 generations of 4Runners. If I could only do "either or", I'd have the 4Runner.

Can you fit a full sheet of 4x8 plywood or drywall in a 4runner?
The main reason I want the Taco is for home renos and wheeling. But if I can fit a few full sheets in a 4runner I might need to look into it more then. I see them on the road and they are really nice looking.

I know a full sheet is too long for a bed but its width thats a problem. Can always leave the tailgate down and just tie it down. Just concerned with width. Online listings are useless because I've tried with SUVs that supposedly have a 4'3" wide cargo area but the actual opening is less so you can't get a full sheet in.

Great question. If I could not get the EXACT build of Tacoma I wanted I was getting prices on 4 Runners on the side. The thing I like about the truck is I can throw horse shit in the bed...(Not that I have ever done that). A 4 Runner is a car from the front seat to the rear window. I don't feel I can get as much in the 4 Runner although I had one back in the day,

Same as a Taco, no 48" X 96" item will lay flat on the floor of a 4Runner between the wheel arches or with the lift gate closed.

My 4R tailgate opening measures 48.5 inches in width and tapers narrower as you go upward. The wheel wells measure at 45 inches apart and about 8 inches above the floor of the cargo area. You could probably get about 3 sheets of drywall in the 4R if you supported it the middle. I have not tried this myself.

I had no idea a car seat would have fit in an access cab. I based this off my friends DCSB and his car seat seams snug in that.

I traded a 2014 4R Trail for the 2016 Taco SR5. I need a truck bed for hauling motorcycles, trail bikes and bicycles. The 4R is a much nicer vehicle inside but I have to agree that the gas milage is atrocious, they really needed to add a 6th gear with the 5.5 gen facelift!! As mentioned before it all comes down to what you need/want.

I think this is a lot of great information and very useful for someone deciding between the two, seeing that I have owned a 2016 off road Tacoma and currently own a 2016 trail runner I can truly say that for me the 4Runner is in a different league and a much better vehicle ( again this is just my opinion) when I drove the Tacoma I felt like it was underpowered and just shaky, the build quality was not that solid for that kind of money. The 4Runner just felt like it was built to tackle anything and it drove much better as far as ride quality and power. When I got into the 4Runner after driving the Tacoma, the truck was a massive disappointment and one of the reasons I decided to get rid of it. I guess it really depends on if someone needs the use of the bed in the Tacoma and if not than an suv will do just fine. I really wanted to like the truck but for the 38grand I felt like it was not for me. I did not write this to steer people in any direction but just wanted to give me feedback since I have owned and driven both.

You buy a Tacoma because you need a TRUCK. You buy a 4runner because... well I can't actually think of any good reason. Its a big, heavy, gas guzzling slob that does the same job of grocery getting with kids in the back seat as a Forester does on a fraction of the fuel.

And on top of that, a Forester actually has good handling.

You're being ignorant And have no idea what you're talking about. The 2010 Trail T4R I had got better MPG than the Tacoma did. She also out performed any equally equipped Tacoma on the trails.

I know exactly what *I* posted. Problem is that what YOU posted does not appear to have any relation at all.

You called it a big, heavy gas guzzling slob, which it isn't if compared to a Tacoma.

But its not a truck. It is a grocery getter. You can't compare them. Their purposes are different and incompatible, regardless of any common parts or body styles.

When I said its a heavy gas guzzling slob, that was with respect to *comparable* vehicles. I even gave you an example, being a Subaru Forester, which does the same job *better* on a fraction of the fuel.
