no one with a DCLB 4x4 OR?

both 4x4's i've ever owned were never lifted or modified, just a wee bit bigger tires than they came with so i don't know anything about modifying trucks for OR..........wondering what a DCLB 4x4 OR with a small suspension lift and some slightly bigger M/T's might get with MPG? with all the added weight of a front and rear after market bumper/winch/sliders/skids/shell with rack on top what do you think this would get?

i'm guessing horrible but i drive a 6 cyl f-150 now so i'm used to not being able to make it past the next gas station.

i plan on using the next truck i get (a taco most likely) for hunting (which means mudding) in the fall/winter and more long road trips/touring in the spring/summer. is it worth it/feasible to switch out tires from M/T to road or A/T tires between hunting and touring seasons to get better MPG?

forgive my ignorance, but i'm here to help fix the ignorance issue.

thanks in advance, and i'm prepared for the witty replies as well.

You are not going into a Taco for hunting with the view of saving money on gas. The fact is whatever you do to the truck will be something you think you need to make it work for you. What difference does a few dollars worth of gas make if the truck gets you to a place where your hunt will be successful.

This is true, but if MPG goes down to 10 mpg with the lift, etc.......it might opt me to get an older used taco for hunting and a used corolla for a daily driver/road trips instead of a single vehicle being a new tacoma modified for off road capability.

Getting an old used Tacoma makes a lot of sense for what you want to do. There should be lots of them around. I just traded in my '914Runner. The fellow who owns the dealership has a friend who wants to build a bush truck out of it. Should work well for that. The guy is a mechanic and can work on the old girl in his spare time. For what he wants the truck for the fact the fenders are rusting out won't make much difference. The truck with a decent set of tires is a real mudder.

That's not bad for a double cab Off-road 4wd, manual transmission, big tires and lift.

That's a rare build. The socal region only gets 15 each month. I have one that should be here by the end of the month!

Did a few observations from over the weekend up to today. Saturday, I did a 140 mile round trip. Averaged 75-80 both ways. I was lucky to hit 19 MPG. This morning, I decided to drive no more than 65 on the freeway. On surface streets, I made sure I rarely went past 2000 RPM. I ended up getting close to 22 MPG. Its crazy driving only 65 on the freeway out in SoCal. People ride your ass like you're going 45 on the freeway. It pisses me off.

Another issue I noticed is our gas tank size. I know it says 21 gallons but each time I filled it up, I only get in about 18.9 gallons. That's driving it after the computer says please refuel and there's 0 miles to empty. I'm lucky to get 350 miles off my current tank.

Probably reserve since they know people are bound to get to 0. Kinda like previous gen still had a gallon or two once you got to E.

I wish my wife didn't know this.

Ditto here, fillup at 0 miles remaining is 18.9 gallons pretty consistently.

Are you driving 65mph in the fast lane or something? I used to drive 60 in my Sentra because that's where the best mpg was. I would drive in lane 3 or 4, counting from the left, and no one ever gave a shit. I would get flashed while in the slow lane if someone decided they wanted to exit the freeway at 75mph after coming from the fast lane. But those are the real assholes so I didn't care. I would move over for truckers if they were trying to pass another truck but they would never flash me. I don't think they cared either

But now I drive 70 because my wife's Civic gets 50mpg at that speed. It only gets about 52mpg at 60mph.

How do you not go over 2000rpm? You can't possibly do that on the roads on nj.

In town it should not be a big problem. I am well under 2k driving under 30 MPH in my Taco. 30 is the local speed limit on city streets ( 50kmph).

More than that and the fines run to $250 for the first 10K over the limit. As for the road rage...grow up life is to short. Run 85 miles per hour up here when the speed limit is 60 and you are looking at anywhere from $350 to $800 along with points that increase your car insurance and the points also will eventually result in the loss of your driving license. Your road rage can be expensive, won't last long and the RCMP don't take kindly to offensive drivers. Just saying.
