Dude thank you so much for this! I think I'm in the clear as far as my bottom end goes. What was the total cost of this repair for you and where/who did the work? Were you able to take the head off yourself or did you just have the shop do all the work? I heard the bottom ends on these motors are pretty invincible. Thanks for keeping my spirits up man I really appreciate it!

The total cost all said and done came to about $2300. Originally the head gasket job was just gonna cost me $1500, but once they found the cracks it added up fast. The shop I use is called Pacific Rim Auto and they are in Seattle. The guys rebuild imports like no other, they were super nice and gave me a loaner while they worked on it too. They work on Subarus and Toyotas mostly so they really knew what to do, and they had the head built by a local builder who pretty much only assembles heads. I got lucky finding them, they were the only ones that asked me to come by so they could make sure it was a head gasket and not something simpler. All said and done I probably could have swapped the motor but what good is that, then I worry about another one going to crap whereas I have a warranty from Pacific Rim for some mileage and MY motor runs like new. I have no doubt I could get the head off and most likely could change the gasket. But heads need to be pressure checked and resurfaced and that requires a machine shop and time. I was working so I went the other route and paid for it to be done correctly by guys I now trust. Plus now my valves have been re-shimmed too, so I got that service out of the way ( a required service on the RZ engines). I'm glad I could keep your spirits up, keep looking around, you'll find a good shop that isn't trying to just get an all access pass to your wallet.

I find that last part hard to believe. Especially around here, there isn't shit. Napa johnson machine? Other than that I don't have a clue. That's too cool you found those guys..wish I was in Seattle right now haha. Yeah I was thinking about a new motor you could probably pick one up for about 3k I'm sure but yeah then you gotta worry about that one goin to shit. I know my valves have never been checked so that's awesome  but hopefully a little magic happens and I find a trustworthy shop to do the work.

@tibblits920 its possible to change the head gasket on your own. I've done it with just a repair manual. I also ended up replacing my head. Be aware that the 3rz heads have a weak spot in them. Between the valves the head is really thin and can crack. So also consider that you might have to replace the head too. The hard part is getting the stubborn camshaft bolt that holds the chain and sprocket to break loose. I made a special tool to brake that bolt. But if you could afford to have someone do it go ahead and have someone do it. Like @speedytech said your bottom end is built to last and your head does need work before reinstalling it. Good luck bud.

Thanks Ray. I honestly think me and my buddy could do it if I just bought a new head and said screw the old one even if it isn't cracked. He just did a motor swap on a Subie and it only took him a few days lol. So I don't see why we couldn't install a new head.

I'd say give it a go. Just make sure one of you has looked up (and hopefully tried) assembling a head. That is a bit beyond my scope (hopefully I'll get an opportunity to try on a vehicle that isn't needed everyday), never tried it save for on a lawn mower. You could do like @BamaToy1997 and buy a fully assembled head from somewheres too.
