Even tho I got free oil changes I still like to do it myself. I'd rather be the only person touching my truck!

Go to the dealership for a filter and buy the oil separate!

That's how I am. I will still be surprised if my local Toyota dealership actually gives me free oil and allows me to use their lift when the time comes... I would have thought they wouldn't do that for liability reasons. The lift isn't that big of deal really though... it would be for my car but a Tacoma has enough ground clearance that lifting wouldn't necessary.

Yea I understand that. I am the same way but.... it's free and under warranty for the 1st 2 yrs or 25,000 miles so take advantage of it. It always stings but I take the Harley to the dealer for the 1st 1k service then do the rest myself. The Jeep has the same plan so it goes to the dealer until the plan expires. No reason to waste your money and the oil is 0w20 which is only synthetic.
The only thing I do is right after pickup I check the oil plug, the filter housing and the oil dipstick for fluid level. It's easy to see that its fresh oil.

My dealer was to rotate my tires as part of my Toyota care. After about 15000 miles and noticeable cupping I marked one. They never rotated them once. I asked them about it and they said they did, so I then showed them where I marked the tire plus had the wheel lock key put away. I do not trust dealers.

Do I have to use the dealer for repairs and maintenance to keep my warranty in effect?
No. An independent mechanic, a retail chain shop, or even you yourself can do routine maintenance and repairs on your vehicle. In fact, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which is enforced by the FTC, makes it illegal for manufacturers or dealers to claim that your warranty is void or to deny coverage under your warranty simply because someone other than the dealer did the work. The manufacturer or dealer can, however, require consumers to use select repair facilities if the repair services are provided to consumers free of charge under the warranty.

That said, there may be certain situations where a repair may not be covered. For example, if you or your mechanic replaced a belt improperly and your engine is damaged as a result, your manufacturer or dealer may deny responsibility for fixing the engine under the warranty. However, according to the FTC, the manufacturer or dealer must be able to demonstrate that it was the improper belt replacement — rather than some other defect — that caused the damage to your engine. The warranty would still be in effect for other parts of your car.

You can go to any Toyota dealer in the US and get the oil changed and tires rotated and vehicle inspected and have them sign and stamp the maintenance record book for 2 years or 25k at no charge

I think I'd rather just spend the few bucks and buy oil and a filter and do it myself that way I know it's done right!!!

The only reason they reccomend a 0w-20 5w-20 is specifically to meet epa regulations (mpg quota) the older Tacomas were running 30 weight they sent out a tsb to change to a 20 weight for better fuel economy And so they could switch everything over to a 20 weight and be a seamless transition. A 30 weight will do nothing more than provide more protection during extreme heat. I do appreciate you trying to help me out though!

Also I don't think Toyota will give me any grief, your not required to run Toyota oil, just an oil that is up to toyotas standards. And for those that get their oil changed at dealership, mark your oil plugs and filter caps, I got some special treatment years back when they didn't change my oil filter and I called them out on it. I would rather change my own, and know that I'm not going to strip my oil pan hole or cause any damage, just for the piece of mind.

Mobil 1 is decent, but not the best as it may have been in the past. If you're not going to go with the OEM Toyota oil, Penzoil Ultra is about the best "off the shelf oil" you can buy imo. But really, any of today's modern synthetic oils will provide more than enough protection, provided you follow the maintenance recommendations.

I've hear penzoil had come out with an awesome synthetic, I'm not sure of the name, the stuff I'm using castrol syntec 0w30 German formula, is phenomenal stuff, it's what most European guys and a lot of domestic guys are running and there is nothing but great things said, i agree that mobile 1 isn't what it use to, I really considered going back to Toyota oil since I can buy it much cheaper than castrol but it's what I run in my wifes grand Cherokee also and figured it would be easier to keep up with 1 type of oil. As stated by Bama really any synthetic by today's standard will be fine, I mean how many Toyota Tacomas are out there that have 300k on the clock and have ran conventional oil, and you know not all owners are as meticulous as us. I think we will all be fine no matter what we use, but just keep up with general maintenance

For the last 30 years the first thing I get for my cars/trucks is a fumoto valve! No more fishing for the oil plug and no more oily hands! a http://www.fumotousa.com/

My dad raves about fumoto valves, I'm just nervous of putting one on since the plug is straight down and the valve would be almost flush with skid plate, I wouldnt want to hit a log or something that would damage oil pan since that valve would be so close to skid plate. But you are right they are wonderful I have had the one with the nipple on the end that you slide a piece of hose on and it's great!

Wonder where my plug is on my 2.7 if it's straight down or at a angle..... And how do you drain from those valves you had to you the button on the whole time?

I don't quite understand what your asking, but let me give it a shot, to drain valves you lift up on the lever and turn it, it's as easy as that, when your done you turn it back and it locks down, if your extra paranoid they have a lock that you can install to make sure the lever doesn't move at all.
