Two different things? Locking a key on your property may not be illegal but, creating a hidden compartment on your vehicle certainly is in some US locations...

If you're interested or care, I attached links to some states codes & laws on this site some time ago...you could search for it if you're interested.

The law, as most are written, doesn't care what or if anything is in the hidden campartment just that a hidden compartment exist. I don't agree with it but, it's out there...

Here's a quick example of it...

only thing I liked about my Ford Sport Trac was the door key pad... of course everyone at the mountain bike trail or wherever had to assume my keys were in there and they were... eh... most criminals won't venture far out of the city so I doubt it's an issue to leave your keys somewhat hidden.... I mean really your going to walk several miles to a trail head or to a kayak launch just to get an outdated Tom Tom LOL :) cause no one who leaves stuff at boat ramps etc.... leaves cash/cards. The picture of the hitch with credit cards in it.... WTF... stupid

No. But, an added hidden compartment requiring non-OEM access could land you with a felony.

I like the hitch locker...not hidden, exterior & still lockable.

It's pretty broadly defined in the laws & cases I've read.

Thats so weird. I feel like no cop would enforce that law or even know about it. Would the console vault be considered a felony then?

Back seat has a release to lift up the cushion and there should be a small compartment. It is where the factory jack is.

I think it's a bullshit law man. It's hard to believe it even exist...the intent is to help limit transportaion of dope and other illegal shit.

Even if it's empty and never used, it's still a felony in some places.

I don't know how many cops know about it tho I know about it & I'm not and have never been in law enforcement.

No, a console vault could fall under the exclusion part of the law allowing the securing if a firearm or justifiable valuable but, I no certain municipalities with the law require you to immediately disclose a console vault...as part of the hidden compartment law.

I can't believe that is real haha. Good to know. So I have a pelfreybilt rear bumper with the hidden hitch behind my license plate. If I put a hitch vault in there, I feel like I will have created a hidden compartment since you would have to lift my plate to see it haha. This is so dumb.

I'm not trying to be a smartass because I'm glad you brought it to OP's attention. But realistically, who in their right mind would charge you for a small container used to store keys? If you are not in possession of a substance/item considered illegal, I don't think local law enforcement will have a problem with it. Chances are you'll have more issues out of a speeding ticket than a cop looking for a hidden compartment under your vehicle. Plus, you're probably doing something sketchy if a cop decides to inspect your car anyway. Just my thoughts :)

An even weirder part is if you buy a used car from a dealer for example...the dealers are not compelled to inform the buyer so you may not even know you have a hidden compartment and you're still illegal & chargeable.

So in some areas the law specifically says they are not required to disclose it...

Not taken that way man and I can't answer your question but, I can show you cops have charged people with a felony for having an empty hidden compartment.

I agree, it's left minded and unrealistic but, no less true. :p

I think if it is truly hidden, nobody will find it.

Mississippi is really that strict? Tennessee doesn't care if you have tinted lights, lifted five feet, or drive with off-road lights on. It's kind of irritating with some things though because people abuse that "freedom".
