I gotta say I am not super happy with my '16 Taco after pulling trailer.

I only tested the manual for about 20 minutes but I got the impression it would tow pretty well since it felt so torquey.

I'll be interested in all the opinions on this. I currently have a 2013 DC OR and drag a 3000 pound boat in the Tennessee hills. I like the 2016 but, I'm not liking this.

The new 2016 tacoma will be able to tow that fine. If you were towing 5000 pounds or more on a regular basis, i would recommend a full size.

Has no clue what ECT is while it's right there on your dash and berates how the truck tows on a public forum? I wonder if there's a forum for Tacoma trucks to bitch about how their owners are completely clueless because they have other books to read (Catching Fire) other than their owners manual on a $35k investment because it's not important. This post means nothing until you tow as recommended in the manual. Then you can come back to us about how useless the truck is. Until then it's the loose nut behind the steering wheel IMO. You also warped rotors on your Silverado 1500 on the same hill in the past and you think a midsize truck is going to do better?!

Sorry, but this type of shit just irks me. Place blame on machinery because the user is ignorant and doesn't follow the recommended practice especially with towing. Sounds like my mother-in-law with any electronics she purchases.
Queue "you mad bro?" meme. :annoyed:

Oh and if you're afraid of vehicles that rev, never purchase a German car (VW, Audi, Porsche) because those fuckers rev to the moon standing still!

If it is upshifting out of manual mode, you need to take it back to the dealer and get it fixed.

They cannot let you keep it from downshifting in manual mode. Say some idiot slaps it into S6 in manual mode and then comes to a stop. The thing would stall and then they won't know what they did wrong. This should be common sense

I assume it will upshift to protect the engine if you are going downhill, gaining speed, and coming up on the rev limiter.

I wish it would. Dual clutch race boxes will let you stall them. Should be common sense to not come to a stop in 6th imo.

Does it do this? Maybe it's in the manual...

Way back when I was a teenager, my mom borrowed my truck for a short trip while in LA. When she came back she said "Your truck really revs. I had to shift twice just going across the intersection." Since that truck had manual locking hubs, I would often use low range (effectively Lo2) for tight maneuvering or crawling in traffic. I hadn't thought to mention that it was in Lo (or even what a transfer shifter was), so she had been driving it around in low range.

WOW bud, Relax, didn't mean to insult the holy Tacoma. I have no issue rev'ing my mustang or even the Tacoma tacking off. I don't really care for the idea of being 800 RPM's below redline for 2 miles straight. And just a thought genius, its not a $35k investment. No new car is an investment. The Tacoma is what I chose to make payments on for the next year or so. But I guess you know that since you're from California and read your owners manual as soon as you get home with a vehicle. Must be a nice bonding experience.

Haha, since you and Dean are so curious... Yep, I read all 3 50 Shades. Read all the Tucker Max books as well, also just finished Cutting for Stone and now reading Daring Greatly. I read about 15-20 books a year. Never read the Hunger Games series, just didn't catch my attention. I prefer older books. Not much that interest me in my owners manual. If I have a big enough issue with something I come here and read or just post a Bitching rant thread, and people like Dean are sure to let me know how to correct the issue. Saves me time and allows me to read the finer books in the world.

This is why I have a full size. The '16 I drove (DCSB TRDORFTMFL) felt shifty and under powered just trying to haul itself around town.

Yeah. It drops to 4th on every single interstate hill on interstate. But I like it overall, just had higher expectations for towing my sled trailer. I am anxious to see how it dies with ECT on

To the OP I appreciate you are the pinnacle of manhood in that you did not read the trucks manual...I get that manuals are for the fairer sex. Real men just , well climb hills in the wrong gears. Next time bring your wife along. She who knows best would have directed you to the ECT button that was right in front of you. I know she would risk a smart ass comment from yourself but at some point in time she would know to look away and I know you would have pushed the damn button and "Voila" as the french might say some of your problems would have disappeared.

She who knows best would have read the manual cuz that is what women do. Most men under 40 never bother to. Some with IQ's in the stratosphere, generally higher than 100, might read the manual before venturing out and most get to it when something breaks or they want to turn the radio on and can't find the button. In your case, the button with ECT on it. Ah well all is now good. You are not going to be happy with your Tacoma because it was never designed as a towing Queen and the ECT button is not going to change that.

The truck is designed as an Urban wheelbarrow with a bent to wander over rocks and mud holes. Anything else we can use the truck for is a bonus. Some like to go to bridge games in sporty two seaters and others prefer an Urban wheelbarrow. You need a truck not an urban wheelbarrow.

About the kind of "load" these trucks are in reality made for.. I also have a 24 ft. single axle trailer that I use for big loads and 4 wheelers, but I tow it with my V8 4runner.. I'm sure the Taco would tow my trailer, but I doubt it would tow it like my 4runner. You just have to be realistic about what these trucks CAN do and what they are MEANT to do and be.. Hope the ECT button brings you a bit of relief and therefore let's you focus back on why you bought this truck to begin with and just enjoy it.. Good luck OP..

Every auto with paddle shifters I have driven will only manually within a certain RPM range. If the engine begins to revs to high or you put it into too tall of a gear, it will shift it for you to protect the engine/transmission.
