So here's an example of what I came up with to replicate the look of carbon fiber. It's not perfect but it resembles it somewhat. Thoughts?

Square tipped brush and some light cross-hatching? That reminds me more of fake ostrich skin boots, but I am seeing hints of the weave.

I personally prefer to do everything in pencils but I am also a control freak. I think you have tackled a very interesting challenge for water colors, and it has to require an insane zen calm I absolutely do not have.

Lol, now that you say that it's all I can think about! I kinda tired it to a small section on the painting and I'm not really digging it, but your right, it need more detailed characteristics than what I've done. I keep looking at the original photograph and seeing how tight the weave is on it. All I can think about it how I don't want to go into all that detail, but either I do it all or pick areas to do it where it shows the most and focus on those and let the rest just be in tones of the appropriate color. I've got the weekend to think about it.

Have you considered hatching the weave down in a #4 or #6 pencil and then laying the coloring in the water colors overlaid? It's a little bit cheating, but it would capture the detail.

That not a bad idea! I like that it would even get some of the metallic look into it but at the same time I wouldn't want the pencil to overtake the watercolor which it very well could since it's on such a large area.
I actually watched a video about how to do the carbon fiber look with spray paint. I have even considered using the same technique only using an air brush filled with watercolor.
Somethings telling me I'm getting too fussy about it. :notsure:
