tacoma trim help for a newbie?

hey yall. i'm still lookin into gettin me a tacoma. i was really hopin i could get a 4x4 but... why is the 4x4's so much more exspensive than a 2wd?

but what i need help with is:

1) would you consider a 2wd? or should i stick it out for a 4wd?
2) can someone put the trims into dumb man words cuz im new?
2.5) does a 2wd with a TRD package have the rear locker?

any help or opinions here would be great!

trim options would be best defined on toyotas site. get a 2wd and you'll regret it, end of story

edit: i just looked at your jeep for sale, why on earth would you even consider a 2wd? you seem to be an off roader which should mean you know the many benefits of 4wd. unless you're looking to get out of that all together. in which case, if all you're looking for is a bed to haul stuff, and weather is not an issue, and you will never consider getting back into wheelin, get a 2wd

the truck would be strictly daily driver and more than likely babied since it'll be with for for the next 10+ years.....

 

It's still always good to have 4wd and not need it than to need it and not have it. Toyota's are pretty much keepers, you'll never know what you'd want to do further down the road.

If your planning on having the truck for 10+ years I'd recommend a 4x4. I'd hate to buy a vehicle, plan on having it for a long time and not be satisified with it. Not saying the 4x2's are bad but I do read for time to time about people wishing they have 4x4 (myself included a few years ago with a 4x2 Ford).

I've got PreRunner TRD Off Road...its got a locker in the rear and its amazing!

also, not that its my main concern but just wonderin what kind of gas mileage are you gettin with the 2wd?

 

I have the 2WD Prerunner and it soots my needs just fine. I'm not an off roader, plus I keep mine stock and I'm getting 21 to 22mpg. When I bought mine last April I paid $17,500 for a used 2007 in excellent condition from a dealer in my area it also came with the TRD offroad package which was an added plus. The 4WD versions I saw were all over $20,000 and many were without the TRD package. If your not going to do any off roading I don't see the point in having 4WD if I get stuck some where I can lock the back wheels and hopefuly get myself out. Hope this helps.

so right now, im on the hunt for a 2wd with the TRD package.

 

1 - You are the only one who knows your exact needs. The rest of us are goons in this regard, but I will share my experience. I am a whitewater kayaker and downhill skier. For getting to and from the mountain, 4WD was a non-negotiable. I'm also getting to the part of my kayaking career where the put-ins tend to be 20 miles up what is generously called a road in the mountains. Could a 2WD do the job? Probably, but not as safely. However, I pay for that capability all the time. I have to haul around 200lbs of 4WD gear that requires lots of maintenance. For driving in Georgia, where I assume it doesn't snow much, 2WD makes a lot of sense. Here in the mountains of Oregon, 4WD makes sense.

• SR5 = Niceties like cruise control added, 16" alloys
• TRD Sport = hood scoop, 17" alloys, bilstein shocks, ambient temp and compass, AC power in the bed
• TRD Offroad = 16" alloys, semi-knobblies, bilsteins, rear e-locker, ATRAC (N/A in DC LB)

Did you decide on which cab and bed config makes the most sense for you? That will also drive which trim options are available.

Ah, one I forgot to mention: the JBL sound system is worthwhile. I love the bluetooth integration, and to my non-teenage ears it sounds entirely decent.

 

i want the 4 door, short bed.

reasoning behind that is i need a truck to haul stuff (job wise and ridin four wheelers)

and the 4 door because i have to carry my brothers and sister places a good bit and i tend to drive alot (because i would rather drive tha have someone else drive.... i kno for a fact i can drive good and its just one of those things if that makes sense.) which i normally end up carryin people with me (like friends when we go out of town.)

and right now i have a set of speakers (2 separately boxed 8" kickers) that i really like and are not too loud but sound good.

im not into the whole super loud, beat droppin rap that rattles everything. i just like a nice kick to whatever im listenin too haha

and trim wise, i am probably gonna be goin for a 2wd (gas mileage, price, and easier to find) and i would like to have the locker in the rear

 

like others have said, if you plan on keeping it for a while. I would go 4wd. you never know where you will be a few years down the road. just my $.02

 

No snow in Ga and there won't be any in 10 years so what's the point ?

 

Base model 4x4's are comparable in price to a TRD prerunner...Mine was actually cheaper . Have you looked into the non trd 4x4's??

 

get what you can afford. that is the most important.

if i go pre-runner, i would like to atleast have the trd

if i could get a 4x4, a base one would be fine.

the problem is, i cant really find any base 4x4s. i only see the pre-runners bein cheaper
