Build thread in sig... 4-link long travel
Best tool is a good education.

it may be expensive, and you may have to travel for it, but if you are truly "expeditioning" beyond the normal weekend camping/wheeling trip, I highly recommend taking a class. I used to teach a wheeling 101 and 201 course at a private off road park. we focused on driving techniques, recovery, and everything "tread lightly" related. we would get folks in the class with top notch vehicles, who were incredible drivers, but when things went south, they looked like it was their first time on the trails. it was sad in a way. for too many people, a big winch and a solid tree gives them confidence to get into something without truly having the knowledge or equipment to get out.

loading up with all of the right purpose built tools, gear, spare parts, etc, while expensive, is pretty darn easy. improvising when there is no purpose built tool or piece of recovery gear perfect for the job, is where your brain comes in. if you don't have access to a class, sitting around a camp fire after a day of wheeling, and listening to the "oh shit" stories from the guys who have been wheeling for 10+ years is going to be your best source of knowledge.

It's kind of a lengthy video, but the shower is used at the 21 minute mark.

If you have time to watch the whole thing I highly recommend it. They go over a lot of helpful information for over landing.

Subbed. Prepping for CA-Utah trip (I was totally unfamiliar with Utah) really got me focused on this. Will contribute later as possible for what I packed for our circumstances.

offroad driving for survival course @kalieaire

Doing some high tech suturing in the back country is not the best idea, but you should have someone with you (with enough equipment) that can keep someone alive long enough for help to arrive or to get them to a medical facility. There are wilderness medical courses that can teach you the equipment you need and how to use it, and I would recommend them over that video. I carry a first aid kit at all times and a stomp kit for trips where it will take hours->days to get the attention needed, but I have a first responder background.

In two season my first aid kit was opened for my pup after he almost sliced off a toe pad while wading in sharp shale. Cut as clean as a razor. Never a peep of pain. At this point our trip was over a week early.

Also carry an assortment of 4+ kits. Kits range from combat trama to panzy hang nails.

    Containers!

What do you guys use to contain all this gear? These have been great so far:
    image.jpg

    image.jpg

    Frontrunner Wolfpack boxes.

They nest like crazy. Look how the lid fits the bottom.

    image.jpg

They are water resistant. These are the boxes we take out of the truck when camping, and have sit out in a few rainstorms. Gear was nice and dry inside.
I used action packers before these, but after 9 years, the sides are collapsing and they don't positively latch. I still think action packers are great, but the Wolfpacks are the perfect size for me.

@StandardTaco I have four of those (I usually only use the number I need for the trip, the most is three so far) that I strap to my roller shelve in my bed (I installed L-Tracks on my shelves for mounting and use the front runner stratchits to hold the wolfpacks down). I also have two drawers in my bed for storage, so I use the wolfpacks for food/drinks and cooking supplies and one carries my extra vehicle fluids when needed.

Nice! They are the perfect size for seperating gear. I combined too many things with the larger action packers. It made access an issue.
How do you like the strachits? Strong enough for external use? I'm considering them for military cases on the roof rack.

@StandardTaco I have a bunch of sets of strachits (and spares). They seem solid. I use them for my 40l water tank in the bed, for those wolfpacks, and for general tie downs on my roof racks. I think I would stop short of using them for anything on the roof that is heavy, would prob move to a real tie down for that. I do not use them for my fridge/freezer though, I felt that a true tie down was needed for that wallet muncher.
