I gotta say I am not super happy with my '16 Taco after pulling trailer.

Sadly, this is all predictable stuff. Smaller, more powerful higher reving engine, more gears to keep it in it's power band. Put any load on it and it will shift, just like you would when riding a bicycle, gear down right away when hitting a hill. I'm still interested in test driving a manual. But in an AC OR 4X4, heard they don't make a stick shift Access Cab Off Road.

Do test the manual. I think it is the one redeemable aspect of the 2016.

Not unless you want to get massively bad MPGs. I understand fuel efficiency is not much concern with trucks towing, but once MPG's goes to single digits with small trailer I think everybody starts looking at more efficient way of doing things. Auto did 7or 8 MPG with ATV and 4 cinder blocks. I can only imagine what would manual get. It would be probably cheaper to tow with Kenworth (atleast Kenworth comes with 2, 300 gallon fuel tanks so no need to stop every exit for fuel).

Manual comes with 4.30 gears and that's what makes feel more Torquey.
However manual is still equipped with gutless motor which is an issue.

You know the easiest option is to trade for F150 right............. :)
Nothing you can do to turn minivan gutless engine into Ferrari.

Most popular up here is the DCLB TRD Sport. Probably because you can either buy a base or a trd sport. DCSB's only come with manual and TRD sport package.

Haha I just traded my F150 for the Taco. I don't need it to run like a Ferrari, just hoped it to perform better towing. But once I can try out that fancy ETC button everyone speaks of from the Owners Manual then I might be a little more at ease.

While sure the manual is an important read, I would point out also, as a product advisor for Toyota, the sales person (PA) needs to also take a moment and explain to purchasers keys things like the ECT button, among other things to help reduce situations like this, or to better gauge the drivers needs ahead of time.

That's why we are supposed to encourage test drives and also on delivery, time the time to walk the purchaser through the vehicle and point things out.

At least with the manual you can actually change the gears when you want to. Apparently paddle shifting doesn't even work right with the auto.

Works for me not sure why you think it doesn't work right. The AT is not a manual. There is a reason for both.

True, you can select gear with Manual, still gutless motor even with MT, and riding low gears only makes you happy for so long. At some point you are going to be tired of constant shifting or engine screaming, unless of course, you drive that truck like car (empty with no trailer).
You can't solve bad motor, nothing people have done to 3.slo made it better, I suspect the same with this one. Some engines just aren't made for truck duty.
What I find funny is that people are trying to find a way to work around of lack of power in 3gen Tacoma (ECT buttons, MT etc) . Why is that? Wouldn't be easier to just buy truck with more power?

Then please explain why my Ram 1500 hemi 4x4 has a tow/haul button. Definitely not a lack of power.

Got to ask, how much have you driven the new Tacoma to have all of these insights?

The 2016 manual transmission felt much more torquey than my 2002 manual. My 2002 felt much more torquey than the 2016 auto off the line. I know this is all "feel" but I think the manual felt pretty darn good. And yeah, I do agree that the Tacoma is not meant to be a hauling rig. That being said 2,000 lbs ain't shit and there is a tow package offered for it, so towing should be a factor in this new Tacoma. The 3.5L manual felt very similar to my Uncle's FJCruiser with 6 speed manual.

the "manual" mode you are reffering to is a limiter which allow you to pick the highest gear for it to shift into this also has a fail safe preventing you from over reving you engine once you begin to redline if will automatically up the max gear you're in the ect power button is right below and right of your 4x4 or push to start button and is intended to help with shifting while hauling a heavier load. ive hauled my friends single horse trailer with horse in it weighing about 6000 lbs without much issue yes you could tell it was struggling but i was about to max load.

Ram has the lowest capabilities in the class. Poor example IMHO. Yes, every truck has a tow/haul mode but it simply helps prevent hunting.
